Blake Hamilton competes in the 200m at the 2024 UIL 6A State Championships

Week three of the outdoor season in Texas is always a little chaotic, and that's what makes it so telling.
In late February, you'll see marks that look like April, mixed with conditions that make you squint. The good is obvious: times, distances, and heights that are ahead of schedule. The bad is the wind, sometimes helping too much, sometimes hurting too much. And the most frustrating part? Plenty of meets still don't have anemometers, so we're left guessing what was legal, what was boosted, and what might've been even better with cleaner conditions.
Even with results still rolling in, the early-season tone is already clear: Texas is fast, deep, and headed toward another ridiculous spring.

The short sprints were electric again, highlighted by Abram Reagan (Austin Lake Travis) jumping to the top of the 100m list with a 10.32 at the Buda Johnson Invitational. Liberty Hill stacked the deck behind him with Jack Pitchford (10.39) and Preston Benefield (10.40) going 1-2 at the Panther Relays, while Silas Scutt (Katy Tompkins) won the Sam Mosley Relays in 10.41 with a +2.9 reading - a reminder that some of the fastest times this weekend came with wind questions attached.
Jordan Harris (Bridgeland) doubled back with a big 100/200 combo, clocking 10.48 and later 21.19 to win both events at Seven Lakes. And keep an eye on the freshmen: Kingston Brown (New Braunfels) ran 10.64, Joseph Ojeyinka (Tompkins) posted 10.63, and Erik Allen (Hebron) ripped 10.66 with a +3.7 wind, the kind of performance that screams "headline later," even if February wind makes the exact ranking tricky.

The 200m had the weekend's biggest individual statement. Blake Hamilton is back at Katy Tompkins and immediately reminded everyone what kind of horsepower that program can generate, blasting a wind-legal 20.38 (+1.6) at the Sam Mosley Relays. It's not just a season-leading time; it's a new Texas all-time No. 5 outdoor and US No. 17 all-time outdoor performance, and it comes from a sprinter who has now proven himself across both UIL and TAPPS championships.
Behind him, Christian Witcher (Conroe Grand Oaks) showed his 400m engine translates down in distance too, running a wind-legal 21.09 (+1.6) that becomes even more meaningful knowing he can step up to the quarter at any moment. Jordan Harris continued his double-duty weekend with that 21.19 200 win, making him the most notable name to appear in both the 100m and 200m top lists.

In the 400m, the sub-48 club got bigger, and that matters in February. Ryan Johnson (Houston Lamar) led the way at 47.54, with Sean Carter (Clear Springs) close behind at 47.74. Those aren't just "good openers," they're early signs that Texas' quarter-mile depth is already in midseason form.
The rest of the list is loaded with names who are either known quantities or ready to become them, including Gavin Drake (Oak Ridge) at 48.28 and Devin Carpenter (Lamar) at 48.39, reinforcing that Lamar's relay machine is already humming.

The 800m delivered exactly what you want this early: sharp times and multiple athletes already under 1:55. Maddox Davis (Katy) won the Charger Relays in 1:53.65, and then popped up again as the meet's 400m list included a Maddox Davis, proof that some athletes are already stretching range.
Roy Ramirez (La Porte) answered with 1:53.87, while Elijah Zuniga (Providence Classical) and Tyson Cotchery (El Paso Franklin) made it a four-deep group under 1:55.

On the distance end, the 1600m/3200m combo produced early-season clarity about who's fit and who's dangerous. Ryder Darcey (Katy) won the 1600 in 4:19.76 after also running 1:56.41 in the 800, a classic Texas "double and still win" move.
Jaxon Asbill (Dayton) showed the strongest distance range of the weekend, taking second in the 1600 (4:21.12) and then coming back to run third in the 3200 (9:24.06). Jed Mazingo (Humble Kingwood) doubled too, landing on both lists with 4:25.62 and 9:31.53, while Richard Mendoza (El Paso Franklin) made the rare 1600/3200 appearance as an underclassman, running 4:27.96 and later 9:40.23.

The hurdles gave us some of the cleanest "who's real" signals of the weekend because the same names showed up across both events. Tristan Horn (Cypress Falls) was the headline: 14.06 in the 110H and then a meet-leading 37.05 in the 300H, the kind of double that establishes early dominance.
Bridgeland's John Harden also doubled at a high level with 13.95 in the 110H and 37.62 in the 300H, while Katy's Cadyn Key put together a strong pair as well (14.26 / 38.47). Add in Timothy Rhine (Shadow Creek) showing up in both (14.79 / 37.95), and you've got a February group already building postseason resumes.

And if anyone was wondering whether the relay era in Texas is cooling off, the answer arrived loud and early. In the third weekend of February, seven teams ran under 41 seconds in the 4x100 in a single weekend, led by Cypress Falls at 40.48 and Mayde Creek at 40.57.
The 4x200 is already flirting with the "Texas line of approval," with Shadow Creek (1:24.85) and Tompkins (1:24.96) both under 1:25, impressive this early, and especially notable given how exclusive the all-time sub-1:23.97 club is. Only 30 teams nationwide in history have run under that mark, and only five of them are from outside of Texas. We could have more joining soon.
Then came the 4x400, where Shadow Creek's 3:11.65 immediately turned heads. With the individual-level quarter-mile talent Elijah Ferguson already going 46.36 indoors, a February 3:11 is a real warning sign for what April and May could look like.
We had Houston Lamar run the US All-time No. 5 mark last year with their 3:08, and Iowa Colony and Iowa Colony going 3:11s, and El Paso Franklin dropping a 3:12. All of those times were in April and May, and Shadow Creek is already ahead of pace.
Relays that defined the weekend:
4x100: Cypress Falls 40.48, Mayde Creek 40.57, Lamar 40.74, Cy Springs 40.78, Tompkins 40.88
4x200: Shadow Creek 1:24.85, Tompkins 1:24.96, Mayde Creek 1:25.29
4x400: Shadow Creek 3:11.65, Atascocita 3:14.03, El Paso Franklin 3:14.80

Finally, the field events are already producing the kind of marks that usually don't show up until later, starting with Liberty Hill's throwing duo. Justin Bordelon won the shot put at 64-3, Jett Harrison went 63-10, and Cypress Creek's Marlon Cook made it three over 60 feet with 61-0.5.
Harrison also showed up in the discus, launching 165-0 to land third on the weekend list - a notable shot/discus double, while Houston Memorial's Harrison Rabel doubled too (55-6.5 shot / 172-8 discus win).

In the jumps, Abdurahman Ghaji (Katy Cinco Ranch) cracked 50-1.5 in the triple jump, Braylon Booker (Cypress Falls) made a loud multi-event appearance by landing on both the long jump (22-5) and triple jump (46-2) lists, and the pole vault once again looked like a Texas specialty with Eric Rose clearing 16-9. High jump added depth, with two athletes reaching 6-8 and a long line stacked at 6-6 - exactly what you want to see this early.
