Kelton Burgoon Hits US No. 1 With 201-8 Discus Throw

Canyon senior Kelton Burgoon delivered one of the biggest throws in the country this season, launching a personal best and US No. 1 mark of 201-8 in the discus to win the Canyon Invitational. Throwing in West Texas can be unpredictable, but when the wind aligns just right, it can turn the region into a thrower's paradise. Discus athletes often benefit from a strong headwind because it creates lift beneath the spinning implement, much like the wing of an airplane. For right-handed throwers, a quartering wind coming from the right increases air pressure under the disc and helps it stay airborne longer. Burgoon found exactly those conditions, and he took full advantage.

The massive throw continues a strong early-season trend for the Canyon standout. Just a week earlier, Burgoon opened his season with a 181-5 winning throw at the Don Black Invitational, showing early promise before unleashing the 200-foot breakthrough at home. He also competed in the shot put at the Canyon Invitational, finishing fourth with a 47-11 mark to demonstrate his all-around throwing ability. Burgoon has steadily improved throughout his high school career, building momentum year after year. Last spring at the UIL 4A State Championships, he placed sixth with a 162-11 performance, and before this season, his best throw had been 172-7, also coming at the Canyon Invitational.
