DISTRICTS JUST RESET THE TEXAS STATE LEADERBOARDS
CJ Williams threw a Texas state record. Three more field athletes made their biggest marks of the season.
After the UIL district meets last week, the Texas boys field leaderboards look quite a bit different. Several athletes posted their best marks of the season at the right time, and the national rankings reflect it, too.
CJ Williams of Frisco Heritage has been one of the best throwers in Texas - and the nation - for two years running. The Ole Miss commit and reigning UIL 5A state champion in the discus and shot put made that case again at UIL 5A District 11 on Apr 9-10. He threw 221-3 in the discus - a PR, a Texas state record, the eighth-best throw in U.S. history, and the second-best mark in the country right now. His winning throw at last year's UIL State Championships was 201-4. The shot put followed: 72-0.25, also a PR, also the state lead. A year ago he won the state title in the shot at 66-3.25. Williams is operating at an even high level this year and there is still a lot of season left.
Mikah Blow of Mansfield Lake Ridge has been one of the more quietly compelling stories on the Texas boys leaderboard this spring. His long jump progression points to a slow build that still mounting: 23-9.25 at the Greg Williams Lancaster Meet of Champions in March, 22-7 at the Bluebonnet Relays, 22-3.25 at the Texas Relays a week later. None of those marks suggested what was coming next: at UIL 6A District 03 on Apr 8-9 he jumped 25-7.25 - a PR, the state lead, and fourth in the country.
Tristan Shelton of Denton Guyer jumped 44-11.50 in the triple jump as his season best entering UIL 6A District 05. That mark was good enough to be competitive at most meets. What he produced at districts was something else entirely - 50-4.25, a PR, the state lead, and seventh in the country. His 2025 best was 40-11. Just let that sink in.
Micah Lockett of Nacogdoches has cleared 7-0 twice this season and 7-1.25 at the Texas A&M Bluebonnet High School Invitational in early March. He upped the ante and cleared 7-2 at UIL 5A District 10 on Apr 8-9 - the state lead and third in the country. His career outdoor PR is 7-2.25 from Nike Outdoor Nationals last June, where he finished second.
With those marks in mind, let's take a look at more of the state rankings.
