Imani Spencer crosses the line a state champion
2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
The UIL 3A girls 200-meter final entered 2026 looking for a new star after the graduation of four-time state champion Taylor Nunez of Randolph, whose dominant career concluded last year with a blazing 22.76 wind-aided performance. With Nunez gone, the event opened the door for a new group of contenders to battle for the title, although the long-standing classification record of 23.44 set by Cynthia Titus in 1986 still loomed large over the field. Among the favorites were Randolph sophomore Imani Spencer, Henrietta senior Ella Klyn, and Crockett senior Emory Sims, all of whom entered with strong regional qualifying marks and state meet experience.
Once the race unfolded around the curve, Spencer quickly established control. Running with poise beyond her years, the Randolph sophomore carried her speed smoothly into the straightaway and separated herself over the final 50 meters to capture the state championship in 23.98. While the performance didn't threaten the historic classification record, it was a fitting continuation of Randolph's sprint tradition following the graduation of Nunez. Spencer's victory also marked one of the few sub-24 performances in the classification in recent years under championship conditions.
Behind Spencer, Klyn closed her high school career with another strong state meet performance, taking runner-up honors in 24.05 after also qualifying among the top contenders a year ago. Sims followed closely in third at 24.30, giving the podium a veteran-heavy look behind the sophomore champion. Yoakum senior Jayla Hessler finished fourth in 25.03, while Grandview's Sydney Mann added a fifth-place finish in 25.15. The race also featured another young talent from Texarkana Liberty-Eylau, freshman Kavaeh Williams, who finished sixth after teammate Jada Stovall scratched from the event.
Although replacing a four-time champion is never easy, the 2026 final showed the next generation of 3A sprint talent is already emerging. Spencer's breakthrough victory gives Randolph yet another state champion in the event and suggests the program's sprint legacy may continue well beyond the Taylor Nunez era.
