Kaison Nunez edges out Sean Stanaland in the tune of new UIL 1A Class state meet record in the 400m

It was nearly a foregone conclusion that Christian Rattler's (Knippa) UIL 1A boys 400m record would be broken on Saturday, and the only question was by how much.
Strawn's Kaison Nunez and Jayton's Sean Stanaland each entered the meet with Regional meet results much better than the record of 48.99. Running out of lane 6, Nunez made up the stagger on the three runners to his outside within the first 200m while Stanaland, the 800m champion, attempted to do the same thing from his lane 2 position.
UIL 1A Boys 400m
Nunez came around the final turn with a 5-meter lead, and Stanaland was pushing hard. Nunez had all of the answers, though, and was able to hold off Stanaland and break the meet record with his winning time of 48.04. Stanaland also shattered the old meet record with his time of 48.29.
Huckabay's Matthew Needham was behind the top two runners, but was comfortably in third coming down the homestretch. He crossed the line in 50.23 and was never seriously threatened by Drake Hooten (Leakey), who finished in fourth place in 50.73.
