Garrett Kaalund's remarkable year added another memorable chapter Sunday as the Antonian alumnus captured the men's 200-meter title at the USATF Outdoor Championships.
The 2022 graduate, now competing for USC, clocked 20.04 seconds to become the first collegian to win the event since 2008. Kaalund entered the meet after missing the NCAA Outdoor Championships because of injury, just months after winning the NCAA indoor title in the 200 meters.

Years In The Making
Antonian head coach Devlyn Lovell said Kaalund's latest accomplishment is a reflection of years of commitment.
"I'm so excited and incredibly proud of Garrett (GK) and everything he has accomplished during the indoor season and at the USATF Outdoor Championships! Success like this doesn't happen by accident. It is the result of countless hours of hard work, outstanding coaching from the USC staff, unwavering faith, and the love and support of an amazing family."

Kaalund's victory came in a race that included four-time world champion Noah Lyles, who pulled up midway through with an apparent leg injury. Still, Kaalund capitalized on the opportunity to secure the biggest win of his career and continue one of the most impressive seasons by a former Texas high school sprinter in recent memory.
His breakthrough is also part of a bigger story unfolding back home. San Antonio has quietly become a hotbed for sprinters in recent years, with names like Tate Taylor and Jake Odey-Jordan, and now Kaalund doing big things on the sport's biggest stages.
