Ben Shearer (The Woodlands Christian) was flowing the pace of the race until he didn't. At 1,200m Shearer began to assert himself and establish a pace most of the other athletes weren't comfortable with. The Arkansas commit hadn't run at the 3,200m distance on the track since his sophomore year when he had a PB of 9:14.22. Shearer finished the race with a new 9:06.20 PR.
Ruben Reina (Har-Ber, Arkansas) was up for the challenge and kept pace with Shearer and was in tow through 2K. Reina finished in second in 9:33.46 and fellow Arkansan Jack Williams finished strong in third place.
After Shearer, Reina, and Williams, the rest of the field was also impressive considering the windy and dusty stormy conditions. A total of 29 boys finished with 10:00 and under performances.
