Boys Varsity Gold Race Recap
Race Recap
This was the first race back for the Nationally Ranked Woodlands squad. With the boys varsity race the first high school race of the day the conditions were perfect for a fast race. When the gun went off it was the Woodlands guys who got out to the early lead. They came through the mile mark in a tight pack mixed in with some of the top guys from Houston Jesuit. By the time the pack had made the loop around through the woods and back to the two mile mark it was Daniel Golden who became the clear favorite. Golden had opened up a large gap on the rest of the field. Golden was trailed by a pack of three guys including his teammate William Hunsdale, Katy's Ryan Yerrow and Beaumont Westbrook's Julian Perez. Behind that pack the rest of the field was strung out and fighting for position. When the boys had completed the second loop Golden had opened up his lead even more, while the battle in the chase pack still had not been fully decided. It came down to the final stretch where Hunsdale made a move coming around the corner to kick down Yerrow and Perez by only a second! Perez who finished third was almost caught by the woodlands third man Nick Hawley right at the line. It was a crazy finish, with the top 2- 5 places only decide by 4 seconds, and the rest of the top 10 not far behind!
The team race was clear from the first mile the Woodlands guys had it locked up. They ended up finishing with only a 18 second spread between their top 5, and an average time of 15:58. The battle between second and third wasn't decided until well into the race. Through the mile mark it looked like Houston Jesuit was going to give the woodlands a run for their money. But the Crusaders fell back in the race by the two mile mark. In the end it was the guys from Katy who would place second led by Yerrow in third and Peter Eskandr in 14th. Seven lakes would slip into third lead by Paul Edson who finished 21st running 16:34.
