The USTFCCCA announced Tuesday Paul Darden and Mike Barnett as Texas High School Cross Country Coaches Of The Year. Coach Barnett coached the Luling boy's XC squad to an unprecedented seventh straight XC title. The feat had never been done before, and they did it in dominant fashion scoring 50 points. Overall they finished 1st, 4th, 12th, 16th and 17th. They were led by a strong senior contingent of Buster RobertsIssac CastilloEdwin ZamudioLeonardo ReynaPeyton Roberts, and RaphaelDeases. Every year after their win they have a tradition of jumping in the pond to celebrate.

Coach Paul Darden coached the Sundown Roughettes to the 2A state title after receiving 3rd in 2016. This year they crushed the competition scoring 38 points led by senior Andrea Sanchez who took the individual state title in 11:24.65. Other top state performers for the Roughettes were senior Hannah Jenkins 7th, freshman Alyzah Mcglasson 15th, sophomore Rebecca Kenley 19th, senior Lexie Terry 27th, freshman Ashlyn Peralta 28th, and freshman Kadince Garza 40th. With a relatively young squad, I'm sure we will see a lot more of them in the future. The sundown boys were also State Champions.
