Katy Seven Lakes sophomore Janey Campbell started off her high school season in a good way. She finished the school season in Austin, Texas at the UIL 6A state championships. She survived one of the toughest throwing areas in the state, Region 3-6A, where some of the Houston area's top throwers compete.

As only a freshman, Campbell won the regional shot put title by PRing and then followed that up with another PR at state. Her 42-6 toss was good enough to earn her fifth place. She would go on to finish eighth in the discus. If last season was good, Campbell wants this year to be better. She has even begun by surpassing the personal best endings to last year.

Campbell started her indoor season when she competed at the LSU High School Classic, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana this past weekend. The sophomore won the overall event with another all-time personal best toss of 44-3.25.

The mark is impressive, but not just because it was nearly a two feet improvement, but also because it now has her ranked No. 5 in the country. Tennessee senior Mensi Stiff holds the top throw in the country with her 52-5.25. Stiff is the only girl to throw over 50-feet so far for the 2023 season.

Everybody knows, to be good you have to put in the work and Campbell has been putting in the work. Even Campbell said, "I beat my outdoor PR and my indoor PR, so I was really excited  because all of my hard work in my off-season paid off.'

However, she is doing more than just showing up at the gym to lift or at practice to throw, she is also watching a lot of film. Campbell admits to watching specific throwers and that has led to an improved technique. "The form that we've been doing, he (Coach Flynt) shows me videos of them to get more wrap in the middle and then a long finish at the end."

The film sessions and the practice reps have Campbell in a good place and it showed at LSU. "I could feel the push off my fingertips. I felt it and I just knew it was going to be a good one right when it left my hand."
