The boys UIL 6A 3200m perhaps had the best make up of this race in several years.
It started off with the UIL 6A cross country state champion Caden Leonard (Southlake Carroll) jumping out to an early lead and generating splits of 1:06, 1:38, and 2:12 at the 800m.
At the 800m, he finally got company fom Benjamin Montgomery (Bridgeland) and Kebede Kerlin (Round Rock). Leonard would eventually settle in to a more comfortable rhythm and most of the field would catch up despite being single filed at the 1600m at 4:28 for Leonards lead pacing.
After the halfway point, it was Leonard and Montgomery leading, but Zach Troutman (Southlake Carroll), Gavin Chapa (San Antonio Reagan), and Aidan Danny Torres (El Paso Eastwood) made a pack of things at 2K with a split of 5:37.
Leonard, Montgomery, Troutman, and Torres would begin to pull away with 600m remaining and 7:53 on the clock at the bell lap.
With 200m to go, it was down to only three and then the same at the home stretch. The 3200m race had now turned into the 100m dash as Montgomery pulled alongside and Leonard as did Troutman.
After a 100m sprint, it was Montgomery who was the better leaner as he perfectly timed it for a 8:51.50 title winning time. Leonard was able to out lean the charge and lean from his teammate Troutman for second 8:51.57 to 8:51.64.
