Nunez Sets Meet Record in 3A Long Jump

Randolph's Taylor Nunez got her State Meet started on the right foot by winning the 3A Girls Long Jump with a meet record leap of 20-2.5.

Nunez never trailed in the event that featured four finalists from last year. On her first attempt, she jumped 19-6.75 which would prove to be more than enough to garner her second straight State title in the event. She ended up attempting four jumps with her second attempt setting the new record. She also went over 20-feet on her last attempt.

The fight for the other two medals went back-and-forth between Yierra Flemings of Cameron Yoe, Rayona Runnels of Malakoff and Abigail Elmore of Gunter. Runnels held second place initially with an 18-2 jump but was passed by Flemings due to her 18-5 third attempt. Elmore moved into third place in front of Runnels with a mark of 18- on her fourth attempt, but Runnels regained the bronze medal on her fifth attempt with a leap of 18-4. Flemings ended up in second with a top mark of 18-8.25.
