UIL 5A Girls 100m

Laila Hackett (Frisco Lebanon Trail) was the defending state champion and the top entering seed. She is a LSU commit and her repeat state performance was an indication as to why she is a division one athlete.

The beginning of the race wasn't the best for Hackett as she was in a slight deficit at the start. She showed composure and was able was able to pull next to Morgan Little (El Paso Chapin) at the completion of her drive phase and then she pulled away.

Over the final 15 meters, it was a close race between Daisha Shular (Seguin), Little, and LaMiaya Henderson (Hallsville). Shular was able to get some space for second and Little held off Henderson for third place.

Michaela Mouton (Killeen) entered the meet with the top regional seed of 54.65. Also in the field were three other girls with 55 second seeds. Joining the 5A conference was Jazmyn Singh (Smithson Valley) who had been one of 6As top quarter milers for the previous two years.

Coming off the turn, Mouton had the stagger made up, but Singh had the advantage on her inside. It was those two coming off the turn and into the home stretch.

Mouton was just too strong and powered home for the win with Angel Brefo (Midland Heritage) getting in for second in 54.37, and Brooke Freeman (Frisco Heritage) third in 54.78.

UIL 5A Girls 200m

Frisco Lebanon Trail's Laila Hackett entered the 5A Girls 200m fresh off winning the 100m title and Hallsville's LaMiaya Henderson lined up with the top seed time coming into the final, but it was Smithson Valley's Alyssa Jones who wrote the story of the race.

Both Hackett and Henderson got out quickly, but Jones shifted gears with 100 meters remaining and calmly ran down three runners ahead of her and she held off Henderson at the finish line. Jones crossed the tape in 23.59 while Henderson was second in 23.71 and Hackett third at 23.96.

Less than an hour earlier, Jones had anchored Smithson Valley's winning 4x200m relay team and showed that she is the top 200-meter runner in 5A.
