Salute To Seniors: Zach Agee

Zach Agee - Houston Strake Jesuit

What was your most memorable race/moment.

Junior year at districts for sure. It was my first time competing at the district meet on the varsity level and I was really nervous for the 800 because we had to run against insane wind on the home stretch. Colin Thompson and I were in 5th and 6th coming into the last 150 meters and we kicked as hard as we could and ended up getting 1st and 2nd. It wasn't my best time but it was definitely my best race.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

Nick Hamilton from Memorial High School. That kid can run like the wind and he finally passed me up this year at regionals, but we've always pushed ourselves to get better and I thank him for that.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

Winning districts 2 years in a row for sure.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

Definitely get in the weight room more and build up more muscle. Also prolly focus on track instead of playing football and tearing my knees up.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Last year at Texas relays I ran my worst race ever and I was really discouraged going into the district meet, but my coaches and teammates got me back on the horse and I followed my worst performance with my best one.

What will you miss most?

My teammates. All the memories we've made together and all the fun times we've had killing ourselves at practice.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

If it doesn't hurt, you aren't running fast enough. Always try to push yourself to the limits, and you will get faster. Also, things don't happen overnight in this sport, you need to keep grinding every day to improve.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

That's an easy question. He is the reason I made it where I am today. He took a tiny middle school boy and trained me to become a young man. There's no way I'd make it all this way with out him.

What are your college plans?

I'm going to be running at the university of Wyoming and studying petroleum engineering.

Who would you like to say thank you to?

All the guys on my team, Price, Ilolo Jonah, Christian, Abrahams.. Everyone that has pushed me to run harder and get out of my comfort zone. Thank y'all for helping me get this far and for sharing all the memories we've had.
What is the funniest thing that happened during your running career?

In Cross Country Season I was standing with one of my coaches and we were watching the girls run and all of a sudden he yells "GO RACHEL!" And I ask who Rachel was and he said "I don't know but there's always at least one Rachel in these races." That was pretty funny.
