Salute To Seniors: Jamie Contreras

Jamie Contreras - Kingwood Park

What was your most memorable race/moment?

My most memorable race/ moment was when I was a Junior and my team won 3rd place at State, even though getting first is always the goal, me and my team were just so happy that we got to be on the award stand.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

My biggest competition was definitely myself, not much of other competitors because it changed all the time of who I was competing against, but it has always been hard for me to mentally push myself to get to where I want to be. But over these past four years I have definitely become a stronger individual.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was getting 4th this year at Cross Country Regionals because I've always wanted to be an individual state qualifier and God blessed me with that opportunity.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

NOT doing soccer instead of Track freshman and sophomore year because it slowed me down LOTS and also running in the summer would've been great.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

My injuries always get in the way but the most difficult obstacle would have to be staying focused on what I wanted to achieve and never giving up.

What will you miss the most?

The XC dinners we have the day before the race , laughing the whole time and racing with my team because we are all in this together!

What advice you would give to younger athletes?

My advice would be to NEVER GIVE UP because God put you in this sport to challenge you and make you a better person! Also, run in the summer because trust me it's definitely worth it! Deuteronomy 31:6

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My Coach, Coach Smith has influenced my life in an ENORMOUS way. Every time I feel horrible and discouraged he will encourage me to do my very best and even though he'll give me the toughest workouts, he knows that I CAN DO IT, and every time I accomplish the workouts he is so proud of me and it always makes my day so much brighter.

What are your college plans?

I'm committed to run Track and Cross Country at Stephen F. Austin University!! Axe 'Em Jacks!

Who would you like to say thank you to?

I would like to say thank you to first, GOD, because He makes me sooooo brave and He gave me this wonderful talent! Second, to my mom for giving me those morning rides to practice. Third, to my coaches, for putting up with me and pushing me to become a better runner. Fourth to my teammates, for making me laugh everyday and putting a BIG smile on my face when we talk about how crazy our workout is.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

Stay devoted in your relationship with Christ and LOVE YOUR TEAMMATES!

Also shout out to Kingwood Park High School Cross Country because we NEVER get noticed at Kpark.

What was the funniest thing that happened during your running career?

My team, we always have funny moments, we are the FUNNIEST THING that EVER happened in world history of cross country / track teams, from eating it on bayou runs to the never ending laughs we share.
