Brendon Hicks - Cy-Ranch
What was your most memorable race/moment?
My favorite race of all time was the Brenham Hillacious Invitational. It was such a great course and the competition was amazing!
Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?
My biggest competition was definitely myself. There was some races where I had had all the training and preparation going into it but I fell apart because my head wasn't right.
What was your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment was winning the 2014 USATF Junior Olympics and becoming a National Champion and All-American in the 2000m Steeplechase.
If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?
I would be more consistent in my training and races. What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome? At Cypress Ranch we had 3 different coaches in my 4 years running for them. One year for track we didn't even have a coach so my team and I made up our own workouts.
What will you miss the most?
One thing I'm going to miss the most is the youngsters I'm leaving behind. They are so awesome and the team is going to be a serious threat in a few years. I'm going to go watch them race at Nike South and Districts.
What advice you would give to younger athletes?
One thing that every young athlete needs to realize is that races are celebrations of your training. If you grind and you work hard enough in practice you will see the results and PRs.
What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?
Coach Hoffpauir has always put us in big time races such as Nike South and Texas Relays. He has provided us with great training and has been a part of our great Cypress Ranch experience. No matter how hard the race or how deep the competition might be he has taught me to keep a cool head and just run your race.
What are your college plans?
I will be running for Jacob Phillips at Dallas Baptist University.
Who would you like to say thank you to?
I'd like to say thank you to my team for always being there for me through all that we have endured. It's been a roller coaster and I'm glad I got to ride it with them. Victory is so much sweeter when the entire team is a part of it.
Is there anything else you'd like to add?
I'd just like to say that anything is possible. My sophomore year I ran a 5:15 mile and placed second to last at the district meet. Fast forward to my senior year I ran a 4:23 at districts placing second advancing all the way to regionals.
What was the funniest thing that happened during your running career?
The funniest thing that has happened was this year during the CFISD meet when we were about to race the mile when all of a sudden the sky just rained down. A huge thunder storm rolled in and we had unfortunately had to cancel the race but my teammate and I Dylan Brokmeyer ran a few laps just out of pure joy and happiness. I can't wait to be in the metroplex with him next year and see all the fantastic things he will accomplish at TCU.
