Summer Training Blog: Jeffrey Butts - 1st Edition

I feel as if summers really bring out the laziness in me, if you can call it that with the amount of miles I do. Wake up early, train, then a mixture of either napping for 5 hours straight, gaming or even having a some sort of social life and hanging out with friends. Summer goes fast though, and so can the chance to get your base in for the upcoming cross country season. My goal for this blog is not to show off workouts, because trust me some (all) of them will not look so pretty or smooth, but just to put some fun into logging my miles and telling the stories of my last summer of highschool.

Monday

For the last few years it's mainly been me and my brother (graduated last year and is currently running for Northwestern state university) grinding it out. But lately my teammates have started to kick it up a notch and I'm very happy to have some of them being really close to me in training, if not kicking my butt.

Today's workout:

45 minute base run - 5.9 miles

Felt really good and smooth the first couple miles took it pretty easy, us being competitive we steadily sped up the pace for the rest of the

Miles. I felt as if lee, one of the best runners on the team and life long friend, sat and kicked. He came out of no where and sprinted past all of us, he just really needed water apparently. Then we lifted for a little bit right after.

Tuesday

Got sick the night before so I already knew as soon as I woke up the workout was going to suck. Still made a decent effort and ended up with a not so botched workout.

Workout: 6 miles

6 mile run with tempo on mile 5 and back to regular pace on 6. Most of the guys didn't make it to practice today because it was raining, but me and dustin, our really fast 800 runner ( ran 1:58 as a freshman this past track season) kept up with me. Lifted after

Today was one of those days where I took a 5 hour nap, And didn't really have a productive day. I'm just really glad it's not as hot as it's been, the rain/overcast felt really good.

Wednesday

Had a off day mostly because the weather but I'm trying to get over my sickness. Just laid in bed all day talked to some cool guys on skype and played an old game on the computer with them. And proceeded to fall asleep at 8 o'clock at night.

Workout: 0 miles

Thursday

Practice got canceled again, I felt really guilty about not running the day before so I set out on a short drive to Dustin's house and we ran some dirt roads out by his house. I really enjoyed it, having a new set of scenery always makes the run go by a little faster and more fun. After, we hung out and played some games. I really enjoy getting to know him better, since he's got to high school we've both been really good friends. Mostly because of our passion for the sport and wanting to go to college with it. He'll be really good his senior year.

Workout: 6 miles

Didn't really put much effort into the run just wanted to get through it, especially with how crappy I felt because of being sick.

Friday

Finally I'm starting to feel better, woke up early enough to get a little snack and a lot of water before the run. Ended up tempoing what was supposed to be a moderate paced run just to see where my training was at. Went to hangout with my runner friend and best friend in general. Tracey g, me and Trace Greer have been really good friends and an amazing grind partner and we always have fun with each other. Him and a bunch of other friends ended up going out to top golf.

Workout: 4 miles

Felt real smooth and fast, really enjoying this summer already.

Saturday

Probably wouldn't have stayed out as late as I did if I knew what was in store for this morning. Went and ran with some buddies that were back from college and ran 8 at a really solid pace.

Workout: 8

I could feel the workout I had ran the day before and I was glad that Im finally getting over being sick. Was exhausted but still went to help kids in my local summer track program run a meet.

Sunday

Coach wanted me to have an off day so I'll probably just play ultimate later tonight with some other kids.

Week in review: 30 miles total

This week was kinda boring, but sometimes just being by yourself and not having anything to do is relaxing. I felt as if I had a really good week of strong training and I'm really ready for this upcoming cross country season especially after how my track season ended with my incident at state. Lesson learned finish the race strong. That mile at state put so much fire in me, I've never been so focused on my running and I'm almost kinda glad that it did happen. If you haven't seen it already, I got passed at the end of the mile at state because I gave up the last 50 meters. The grind starts now and this being my last year of high school, I'm not going to let the opportunity to slip for me to get a lot better.
