Race Recap By: Anna Elkin
This past weekend I raced at the STATE MEET!!!! After counting down the days throughout the season the weekend was finally here!! Leading up to the races we didn't really change anything. I did all the same workouts & my race plan was the same as most weeks. We live by the idea that if what you're doing is working then why change it. So, even though this was the state meet I tried to treat it like any other race. In the 2 mile I knew specific splits that I wanted to run and we hit all of those perfectly. The first mile was exactly what I hoped it was going to be & we came through at around 5:12. I stayed with the lead pack for about 6 laps and then when they took off I just tried to finish as fast as I could. I ended up placing 5th with a time of 10:37. This was most definitely a race I am proud of and I really happy with how it played out. The mile was the next day and coming off of a really good race the day before I was just hoping to do the same thing again. We went out crazy fast. The leaders went through at about 64 and I think I was at 65. When I realized the split I knew the race was going to come down to who would just hold on longer. I ended up placing 8th with a time of 4:56. Even though I didn't place as high as I would have liked I left this race with no regrets. In both of my races this weekend I wanted to give myself a chance to accomplish my goals so for me that was going out with the leaders and just holding on as long as I could. After the race we went to Amy's ice cream which I was so excited about because I gave ice cream up for the season. After 130 days of no ice cream, I was so happy to be able to finally enjoy my favorite food again.
Lastly, I just wanted to say a big thank you to all of my friend and family who came to my races this weekend. I was so lucky to have such a big support group there this past weekend and throughout the past four years. Also, thank you to my incredible coach who has never stopped believing in me. Without him I would most definitely not be the runner I am today & I'm so thankful for everything he has done for me. Three years ago I came to watch Robert win both the mile & 2 mile and at that time I would have never imagined that one day I would be able to compete at this level. This weekend was most definitely a dream come true and the perfect ending to four incredible years. It's crazy to think that I'll never run in a Hebron Hawks singlet again but I am so excited for what the future holds!!
One last thing, big thanks to my best friend Abby who came with me this weekend!!! Thank you for carrying around my bags, making sure I remembered my bib, & running my warm ups with me. You're the best ever & I can't wait to come watch you at the state meet some day!!
