Sundown High School: A Small School with Major Performances

Sundown High School is a 2A school located in Sundown, Texas. At the State XC Meet last weekend, they showed up and won big in both the Boys and Girls races both as a team and as individuals. Steven Quintanilla, a Sophmore from Sundown, won the boys 2A race with a time of 16:13.98 while Andrea Sanchez, a Senior from Sundown, win the 2A girls race with a time of 11:24.65. On top of winning state in both the boys and girls division,  the Cross Country Coaches Association of Texas made Sundown Head Coach Paul Darden the 2A Boys and Girls Coach of the Year.

Earlier this week we got a chance to talk with Steven and Andrea, they reflected on this cross country season as well as talked about their goals for the upcoming track season. One thing that both Steven and Andrea have in common is that besides running Cross Country is they also play Basketball. On top of Cross Country and Basketball Steven also plays Football. On Friday nights, he has football games and then early the next morning he has a race. The fact that they both participate in multiple sports could be one reason that they are excelling in cross country. Read through both of their interviews on the following slides to see everything we talked about.
