Kaylor Harris PreSeason Q&A: Hungry For PR's

Kaylor Harris and Team U.S.A. after the World U20 Championship 4x100m gold.

We're catching up with several athletes to hear everything from what they're most excited for heading into this outdoor season to their favorite pre and post race meal. This afternoon's Q&A is with sprint sensation Kaylor Harris from Mesquite Horn. Harris holds one of the fastest 60m times in the country and is one of the top outdoor returning 100m runners in Texas. In 2016 she was the New Balance Nationals Outdoor 100m champion and the AAU Junior Olympic Games 100m champion. The Mesquite Horn senior was also part of the gold medal winning World U20 Championship 4x100m relay team.

What are you most excited for this outdoors season and why?
I'm super excited to see how my final high school season will turn out. I'm most definitely ready to run in my final Texas Relays as a High School athlete and also eager to compete against the best athletes in the country.

What are some of your goals this season? What steps do you have to take to get there?
Bettering my marks each season is always the main goal for me. In order for me to meet those expectations I know I must go into every practice with a purposeful mindset.

How do you think the indoor season went? Are you happy with how things started out? Do you have anymore indoor races planned?

So far indoor has been very positive. Pretty happy with my results but never satisfied. So when I compete in the Dunamis indoor classic and New Balance Nationals I will expect new pr's.

What are some of the things that keep you focused heading into a big competition?

I always remind myself to just trust my training and the process.

What was your experience running at state like last year? What did you take away from it? What do you think you can build on to make it back to that level this year?

State 2016 taught me a valuable lesson to treat every race like it's my last and not to get too comfortable. My mindset will be the mainly focused on getting back to state because I have a national title, world title but not a state title. Who does that? lol

If you had to pick out the weakest part of your race what would it be and why? How do you plan on strengthening it this season?

The weakest part of my race varies from time to time. There are times where my start isn't the great and I come out of my drive phase to early. Then there are times when I lean wayyy before the finish line.

What's the strongest part of your race? What do you do in training to help you with that part?

The strongest aspect of my race would have to be my reaction time. My father always preaches to me how to react to the gun instead of anticipating it. And we also do several reaction drills.

Who do you think some of your biggest competitors will be this year?

Myself. In my mind I'm most definitely my biggest competition.

Who inspires/motivates you the most as an athlete?

My family. I come from a house full of athletes so everything we do is competitive. We even compete in who can pump the gas the fastest.

Fun Questions:

Favorite Pro athlete and why?

My favorite pro athlete would have to be De'vante Harris. Maybe I'm a little bias because he is my brother but he's just overcome so much adversity to get where he is today.

Favorite Pre and Post race meal?

Fav Pre Race meal would be sweet potato pancakes! Fav Post Race meal hands down is Chick Fil A #3 eight count meal with 4 packets of ranch!!!

If you could have a superpower what would it be?

Hmm be Immortal. The word just sounds cool.

Cats or dogs?

Puppies ALLDAYEVERYDAY!

Would you rather fight one horse sized duck or 100 duck sized horses?
One horse sized duck. Because ducks aren't that scary.
