Gabe Oladipo throwing the discus for Team USA in The Pascual, Cali
Fort Bend Hightower senior, Gabe Oladipo tied the state record, in the discus, this past weekend in Dallas, at the Jesuit-Sheaner Relays. Oladipo threw the tying 215-2 after several weeks of climbing up the chart. The Texas A&M signee progressively improved throughout the season by hitting marks of 201-9, 206-10, and then a whopping 211-7 a couple of weeks ago.
Oladipo is not new the the throwing scene. He was on the USA IAAF World Youth Team in 2015 and competed in the discus, in The Pascual, Cali. Oladipo had aspirations of breaking the state record for a while now. In a TX MileSplit interview last season, Oladipo openly discussed his pursuit for the record.
Now that he is there, the only thing left for Oladipo to do is get over and beyond the 215-2 mark and become the sole record holder as well as set the UIL record at the State meet. This week, at the Texas Relays will be the next discus competition and opportunity for Oladipo and a chance at the record. What a time it would be to do it in Austin in front of a crowd like that.
Brian Robison of Splendora, a heck of an athlete was the lone record holder. In high school, Robison was a Texas UIL State Champion and then went on to star at the University of Texas in both football and track and field. Today, Robison is having a productive NFL career with the Minnesota Vikings. Since 2002, Robison has been the Texas state record holder in the discus, however he no longer holds that distinction all alone.
