Christopher Wise placed third at Dunamis last year and won the 800m at Dunamis this year
Things got started on Friday when the girls and boys long jump events were conducted.
DeSoto transfer DJ Henderson took to the runway for the first time since January 6th. That's the only competition for Henderson as he won the long jump competition at the Texas A&M High School Indoor Classic with a 23'0.75" jump. Henderson would experience a slight injury and would rehab before returning to action this weekend at Dunamis. Henderson won his second competition in as many meets with another 23 foot jump. He went 23'9" for an indoor PR and won the competition by over a foot.
Henderson, the Oregon signee burst on the national scene last season when he jumped 23'11" at the TTFCA Meet of Champions and then a crazy 25'5" jump at the Great Southwest Classic. With two outstanding competitions in the books already this year, watch out for Henderson's 2018 outdoor season.
The girls long jump was also held on Friday evening. That means there is a Jasmine Moore warning. So much for the warning because what was expected to happen -- did. In just her second long jump competition of the season, the results of this one were much like the first one. She finished on top as usual and did so with a SB 19'5.5" and like Henderson, she won the competition by over a foot.
Moore hit the runway once again and this time it was for her signature event, the triple jump. It wasn't perfect, but the results were again consistent in ending with a win. Moore would survive three scratch jumps to take the win thanks to a big 42'6.25" on her fourth jump. All of Moore's jumps were over 42' which also show her consistency. To put things in perspective, Moore won last year's NBNI with a 42'6.75" and she has hovered around that mark all season long already with the exception of a 41'8.75" back on January 6th.
In the boys 60H, possibly the surprise of the day was Eric Edwards not making the finals. Hampered by a less than 100% hamstring, he ran 8.26 for his slowest time of the year by far. That put him in the 9th position coming out of the prelims and one spot out of the 60H finals. Edwards did bounce back in the 60M prelims to run 7.16 to show off his speed. Again, he fell just short of the finals.
All was not lost for the state of Texas in the 60H. In one of the strongest events in the state this season, the short hurdlers of Texas stepped up to the plate. Converse Judson senior Tre'Bien Gilbert wasn't phased and was more than willing and prepared to take the win. Gilbert ran 7.96 in the prelims for the top spot heading into the finals. In the finals, he had the performance he has been waiting to unveil. Just an hour after the prelims, Gilbert would drop a big time PR of 7.84 to win.
Gilbert who has competed in the gauntlet of Texas hurdles this 2018 indoor season has been preparing for just this type of race. Gilbert who who came into the day as one of six hurdlers in Texas who have run 8.00 and under was sitting tied for #4 is now the #2 hurdler in Texas and #3 in the nation.
Former Cibolo Steele and now IMG Academy (FL) hurdler Lejond Cavazos also had a good day. Cavazos had the #2 qualfiying time of 7.96 and he finished third in the finals running another 7.96.
In the boys 800m, Foster senior Christopher Wise added one more win for Texas. He took the 800m with a 1:57.31 winning time. Wise, who already came into the meet as TX #2 with his indoor PR of 1:56.78 ran at the Arkansas High School Invitational.
