COVID-19 has had it's first 2020 Texas high school cross country meet casualty with the cancellation of the Greenhill/Luke's Locker 6 Mile Relay. The number of cases have been on the rise in the state of Texas for over a a month. That is causing school districts to scramble and make daily decisions regarding when and how to handle the return of the upcoming school year.
Involved in that of course is athletics. Dallas County has restricted in person learning in schools from beginning until at least September. The Greenhill/Luke's Locker 6 Mile Relay meet is held at Norbuck Park in Dallas, Texas.
Jason Yaffe, Director of Academics and Head Boys & Girls Cross Country Coach at Greenhill Academy issued the statement below.
It is with a heavy heart that I write to inform you that the 2020 Greenhill / Luke's Locker 6 Mile Relay event, scheduled for 8/22/20, has been cancelled. This decision was the result of Greenhill's athletic conference, the Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC), forbidding any athletic contests until after Labor Day. Furthermore, Dallas County is putting in place stricter guidelines in an effort to lower pandemic numbers. I am so sorry that you and your team can not open up your 2020 xc season racing over hay bales at our long standing relay meet. In these really trying times, we just need to put the health and safety of all community members first. If the pandemic subsides, I will do whatever I can to host the relay later in the Fall. I hope that our runners can have a xc season and that the Greenhill / Luke's Locker 6 Mile Relay will continue well in to the future despite these unprecedented times.
Be well. ours, Coach Yaffe
