Tornillo ISD Cody Burris Talks About New Sports COVID World

Tornillo is one of the top UIL 3A cross country programs in Texas under the tutelage of Coach Garcia. They return the girls 3A state meet third place finisher in Kylene Elias for the 2020 cross country season.

Last weekend, the team co-hosted the Tornillo/San Elizario Invitational where we spoke with their athletic director Cody Burris about the state of their athletic program amidst the new COVID world.

Burris and Tonillo ISD  have been moving forward with athletics, enabling the athletes to compete. "It has been a challenge, but our community is real supportive of us," Burris said.

It takes more then support and the desire to compete in these unchartered waters. "We've been following all of the safety protocols to put our kids in the safest place where they can compete and still represent their school, we are reinforcing social distancing, the masks, and things we do when we travel."

"We are keeping them safe and we should still end up at the state meet, so everything is working out really well."

Burris has been to several sporting events and he believes the leadership in El Paso country is doing things the right way. "As a county, I think ours is doing a great job. I've been to some different types competitions outside of El Paso County, I think we're doing better than some of the places I've been already.

COVID continues to bring challenges and new information everyday keeps administrations, coaches, athletes, and communities adapting, but we could make it to the end if all safety protocols are followed. Burris believes in his coaching staff and that this will end well for the Tornillo program. "We are keeping them safe and we should still end up at the state meet, so everything is working out really well."
