Houston ISD- Varsity/District Sports Participation Only

Houston Westbury athletes compete in the 4x200 Relay at the 2019 Texas Southern Relays

We've seen it some school districts throughout the state, but now, it's being adopted in one of the largest school districts in Texas and the country.

The Houston Independent School District (HISD), the seventh largest school district in the country and Texas' largest is canceling high school non-varsity and non-district sport events, according to Houston based NBC affiliate KPRC Click2Houston.

Due to the increase in cases of COVID-19, the district will only participate in varsity sports; junior varsity and freshman sports along with any events competing against non-district events including tournaments are suspended until further notice. Several middle school sports are also suspended and others are under evaluation.

Prevention of both contraction and spreading COVID are the key results of the decision.

Per HISD, only families of athletes will be allowed to attend events and even that could change depending on the intensifying of the virus.

Houston is the fourth largest city in the United States and there have been 22,4949,330 confirmed cases and 379,941 deaths.
