Early Look At UIL 4A Girls State Meet

Abigail Bass and Kaufman girls get a fast start to a race earlier this season

The UIL 4A girls race last year was one of the best races last year at Old Settlers Park. It just might be that way again.

The Canyon girls added another championship to their tally by squeezing a mere six points ahead of Celina. The battle for third was also tight as Kaufman, Bandera, and Waxahachie Life were all in the mix until late in that race and were all battling it out for third. The Kaufman girls were able to take the bronze trophy home adding to their history.

Running without some key contributors this year, Canyon will get all they can handle once again as Celina looks primed and ready to take the top spot.

However, that won't be easy as Canyon still has their number one finisher from the last two state meets. Junior Abree Winfrey is as reliable as it gets when it comes to big meets. She is the 4A overall third place finisher in both 2019 and 2020 and she'll once again lead they Lady Eagles this year.

Celina will be led again by defending individual champion Adele Clarke. She is currently ranked No. 2 this season and her team might have the best 1, 2, 3 punch in the state with the way Alexis Frick and Aimee Clarke have been running.

Individually, Abigail Bass has been looking tremendous all season long. The Melissa junior won the McNeil Inv. over some of the best 4A girls last month and should be viewed as the current favorite.  With Clarke being her district foe, those two could bounce back and forth until state race day.

Don't overlook Fredericksburg sophomore Taylor Grona, Jetzibe Trevino (Huffman Hargrave), Winfrey, and others who could make a heck of a two-mile race next month.
