WATCH: Kevin Sanchez Runs 8:59.88 In North Texas 3200m

Kevin Sanchez ran a new PR with his 8:59.88 3200m performance at the North Texas Winter 800m/3200m

The Texas sky was clear and the brisk night was a cool 53 degrees with minimal wind. That made for a near perfect night for distance running. Kevin Sanchez took the prime conditions and made the most of it by running an outstanding race that produced a 8:59.88 PR for the 3200m distance.

Entering the meet with a previous personal best of 9:15.15, Sanchez had a goal of running in the low nine minute range. However, he  got off to a quick start going around 30 seconds for the first 200m then settling things down over the next 200m coming through a quarter-mile in 1:03.92.

"I just wanted to feel smooth, but also go fast."

The rest of the field followed the lead set by the Austin Vandegrift product through the first half-mile and hey kept contact with Sanchez/ However, as the Texas UIL 6A cross country state champion mooted through with official splits of 2:19.93, 3:22.84, and 4:31.80 for thr remainder of the first mile, his lead began to grow. Sanchez clearly found his rhythm by going 1:10 or under for each of those laps, "I just wanted to feel smooth, but also go fast," he said.

Although, this was an outdoor meet in January, this wasn't Sanchez' first race of the year. He won the Texas A&M High School Indoor Classic one mile in 4:14:47 a couple of weeks ago. He's been doing some 400m pace work along with some stamina and tempo runs, all of which have generated his current fitness level.

"I want to keep trying to improve you know and see how low I can get it this year," he said.
