Emmanuel Sgouros Named Texas Cross Country Gatorade POY

Emmanuel Sgouros prepares to compete at 2022 Eastbay Nationals

After making a climb up the SPC ladder as a young sophomore Emmanuel Sgouros was ready to make a name for himself for his junior cross country season. Due to COVID and an SPC season shutdown, that didn't come to fruition.

That presence was finally made this year as the SPC cross country season resumed and the Houston St. Johns product took full advantage.

Sgouros' impressive senior season has now earned him the honor of being named the Gatorade Performer of the Year for the 2021 Texas high school cross country season.

Beginning the season with a 15:13 5,000m at the ever-so-difficult Brenham Hillacious Invitational, Sgouros rattled off five consecutive wins that included a win over UIL runners at McNeil and the SPC state meet.

A combination of big postseason runs at the Eastbay South Regional (fourth place - 15:04.22) and Eastbay Cross Country Championships (10th place - 15:29.40) earned him All-American honors and perhaps sealed the Gatorade POY honor.

Sgouros is now eligible to be considered for the National Gatorade POY.
