Emily Smith Trying To Stay Undefeated In TAPPS For 2022

- Written by Stuart Kantor

Emily Smith, the diminutive powerhouse from Colleyville Covenant Christian has now won two individual Cross Country titles, and as a freshman last season, she swept the three multi-lap races at the TAPPS State Track & Field Meet, two of which were PRs: 2:20.50 in the 800 and 5:18.06 in the 1600.

By her own accord just an "average soccer player," Smith loves the idea that soccer season splits her passion for running in the Fall and the Spring. One of the more focused athletes in Coach Reeve's career, he extols Smith's intangibles: "Her work ethic is one of the best I've ever coached and have been around."

A violinist and possible future short story author, Smith's love of the creative arts is a welcome diversion from the rhythmic repetition of the longer races, especially the two-mile, where she admits her mind wanders.

On May 6-7, 2022, back in Waco, Emily Smith will attempt to keep her perfect streak intact, going eight-for-eight in her young career before a little time off and then recharging for Cross Country season. And Coach Reeves will be right there, helping to manage Smith's training so to not overtrain; Smith, on the other hand, will look to add to Colleyville Covenant Christian's decades long history of athletic excellence.
