Christian Gonzales, Tayte Cormier Get 1A 800 And 1600 Wins

1A Boys 800 meters

Not even 200 meters into the race, Christian Gonzales of Sulphur Bluff took command of the field and showed why he was last year's state silver medalist. With a 55.24 second first lap, there was question if he would be able to maintain his pace through the second lap.

With the finish line in sight, Gonzales was met by Jake Ozymy in the final straight away. The Avalon junior took the lead and it appeared the title would be his. Gonzales responded by retaking the lead and winning with a time of 1:57.63, nearly after tripping behind Ozymy who finished second in a time of 1:58.08.

Barksdale Nueces Canyon's Justin Aguirree held on for third with a time of 2:00.36

1A Boys 1600 meters

The state track meet consistently boasts personal bests and seasons bests among competitors. The 1A boys mile relay was no exception to that. All nine runners turned in a faster time than they originally qualified at.

Leading the way was Tayte Cormier. The Mertzon Irion County senior was leading the pack all four laps and powered through the finish with a 1:04.11 final lap to win with a time of 4:37.13.
Cyrus Kubena of Dime Box followed closely behind Cormier and held onto second with a time of 4:41.02. Wiley Gaskins of Ackerly Sands nearly overtook second but finished third, crossing the line 4:41.25.
