A headwind suppressed the distances, but that did not
prevent Randolph's Taylor Nunez from winning her third straight UIL 3A State long
jump title. Her mark of 18-6.25 on her first attempt proved to be more than enough
to give her the win.
At the Regional meet, Nunez suffered a rare defeat in the long jump to El Maton Tidehaven's Mary Johnson by just a half inch. Johnson ended up fourth with a mark of 17-9.75 and appeared headed for a bronze medal before Cameron Yoe's Yierra Flemings passed her up on her fifth attempt.
Flemings jumped 18-2.5 to take second place. Flemings and Nunez went 1-2 for a second straight year. Yoakum's Jayana Phillips finished in third place with a jump of 18-1.25.
Nunez, a junior, jumped over 18-feet on three of her jumps and now has nine State gold medals in nine tries with three more events to come later in the meet.
