Last year, Georgetown's Joseph Wienen had to settle for third place in the UIL 5A Boys 3200m, but this year he made a bold move with 250m left and passed up Amarillo's Adam Burlison to win in 8:59.98.

Burlison, the reigning State champion, led the entire race and pulled away at 800m to lead by 10-15 meters. He was over two seconds ahead with one lap remaining, but it appeared that Wienen snuck up on him with 200m remaining and he was unable to respond to the move.

It was a close race throughout with seven runners in a tight pack until the final 800m. Georgetown's Nolan House took home the bronze medal with a 62-second final lap to finish in 9:05.29.
