Klein Forest entered as the defending state champions after going 3:11.69 for the win in 2023.
They were back and nestled in lane three with their 3:13.90 seed from regionals. 2023 runner-ups The Woodlands were also in this event and it was them who had the fastest regional mark of 3:13.11.
Atascocita initiated things with their 47-second quarter miler Jordan Parker as he executed a flawless leg and handed off first at the exchange with Duncanville close behind. Klein Forest was also right there at the exchange and pulled even closer at the cut in line.
Klein Forest swung off the turn to pass Duncanville and pressed Atascocita in the exchange zone on the second exchange.
Duncanville closed on both Atascocita and Klein Forest on the turn of the third leg, but Atascocita tried to pull away once again and they were eerily close going into the last exchange.
At the top of the turn of the final baton carry, Atascocita was inside on the rail with Klein Forest on their right shoulder, but DaKorien Moore passed them both on the backstretch to put Duncanville in the lead with 200 remaining.
On the homestretch, Atascocita grabbed the lead back by passing Duncanville to get the win in 3:10.26. Duncanville had a finishing time of 3:11.51 and Klein Forest turned in a bronze medal run of 3:12.08.
Although The Woodlands were just off the podium this year they were a part of the group of four teams who were just a little bit better than the rest of the state meet field as they finished with a final time of 3:12.36
