8th Grader Ruel Newberry Runs 9:11 Two Mile At NBNO

Ruel Newberry (13) competes at the 2023 AAU Junior Olympic Games

Eighth grader Ruel Newberry already has a nice youth track and field resume, but this week at the New Balance Outdoor Nationals in Philadelphia, he has taken things to another level. The Harpool Middle Schooler who will be entering the eight grade has just notched two elite performances.

On Thursday, Newberry won the middle school boys mile with a new personal best time of 4:33.64 to edge out Gordon Smith's (NY) time from the previous heat where he ran 4:33.88 for second place.

This morning, Newberry was back on the track to run the middle school two mile. The I'm Better Than That (IBTT) Track Club member kranked things up a notch when he ran 9:11.70.

Newberry's two mile performance would have ranked him 29th in the 2024 Texas high school 3,200m rankings.

Not only was that another personal best mark by a long shot, but it was a meet record as well. After opening up with a 4:36.27 first mile, the Dallas-Fort Worth area runner negative split the second mile by going 4:35.44.
