Ruel Newberry capped off one of the most impressive freshman boys campaigns in Texas history as well as all-time nationally. The Denton Guyer new-comer ended the 2024 cross country season with a win at the RunningLane XC Championships.
Newberry got out to a fast start going through the first mile in 4:34, followed by a 4:59 split in the second stanza for a time of 9:33 at the two-mile, and he finished with a 5:12 for a 14:46 overall winning performance.
After trailing for the first half of the race, the young Texas was able to take the lead and held on for the final 500 meters.
It helped Newberry get back to his sub 15-minute running ways. He began the year with four runs in the 14s en route to his 14:44 all-time freshman performance. We next saw three consecutive races over 15-minutes in the Texas UIL championship season and at NXR South with is 15:12, 15:09, and 15:49 runs.
