Samantha Ennin (Plano John Paul II) is one of Texas' top all-time long jumpers
The FasTrak Athletix High School Indoor Challenge saw some impactful performances that not only were pertinent to this meet, but signs point to some impressive runs down the road from some of these athletes.
Here are some of the runs, jumps, and throws that were key this past weekend in Houston as well as the weekend before at the North Texas Showcase (NTS).
Girls Long Jump/Triple Jump
Samantha Ennin (Plano John Paul II) is a multiple TAPPS state champion, but also one of the best overall athletes nationally. Her jumping and hurdle capabilities will have this young lady a well known commodity this year to those who are unaware of her.
At the NTS, she opened up with some impressive stats. Her best jumps in the events there produced 21-1.25 long jump and a whopping 41-11.50. With those jumps, she moved into the top 5 All-Time Texas (indoors/outdoors) in the long jump and just outside in the triple.
Caitlyn Cavitt (Arlington Martin) turned in another big time long jump performance with her 19-11.25 to come in third place behind Ennin. With her four attempts, she made the best of things and showed her fall training was great by turning in four jumps over 19-feet with her leaps of 19-0.25, two 19-3.50 jumps, and her longest 19-11.25.
The girls triple jump continues to be a fast growing event and ascending further and further towards an elite event for the state.
Ennin's 41-11.50 was just the tip of ice burg in terms of outstanding triple jump performances. Two other Texas girls jumped 40-feet or better at the NTS. Whitney Robinson (DeSoto) had six leaps over 40. She went 40-0.25 twice, 40-3.50, 40-8.25,40--11.25, and a best of 41-8. Additionally, Lily Muzzy (Georgetown) who won a UIL 5A state title last year opened up with a 40-footer.
Boys Long Jump/Triple Jump
Cordial Vann (Frisco Heritage) is one of the top sprinters in the country, but the speed he possesses doesn't go to waste on track. He uses that speed and acceleration to generate high level velocity to be an outstanding long jumper.
He won the event by using only two of his attempts; Vann made the best of those leaps. Going 24-1.75 and 24-6, both were enough to win the competition.
It wasn't just Vann who got the season off to a flying start. Harrison Lowe (Katy Seven Lakes), Kahdyn Freeman (Comal Pieper), Bradley Lowman (Stafford), and Kingston Williams (Princeton) all jumped over 23-feet at the NTS.
Lowe went 23-2.75 twice with a 24-1.75 for his second place finish, Freeman went 23-5 (followed up by 23-0 a week later), Lowman went 23-2 and 23-2.75, and Williams had a best of 23-1.50.
In the triple jump at NTS, Lowe began the season with leaps over 47-feet. He went 47-5.25, 47-6.75, and 47-9.50.
Girls And Boys Sprints
The girls 60m have a couple of girls who have impressive starts to the season already.
Violet Hewett (Round Rock Westwood) had a good season in 2024, and so far, the start to her indoor season at the FasTrak Athletix. She went 7.63 in the prelims to get warmed up and then blazed a 7.52 in the finals to win.
Lily Pierrot (South Grand Prairie) also had a hot start in Houston. Her preliminary heat was to the tune of 7.77, but she proved that was just a warm-up. She then dropped a 7.57 in the finals to finish second.
Aaliyah Barnes (Killeen) and Kyaliah Davis (Klein Forest) also added early and quick runs to the early season rankings. Barnes went 7.63 in the prelims and followed with a 7.60 in the finals and Davis went 7.69 ad 7.61. Davis also added a 24.48 to win the 200m in Houston.
In the boys 60m, Kaleb Samuels (Pearland) and Canaan Dennis (Jacksonville) are the top two sprint leaders so far this year.
Samuels ran an impressive 7.00 in his preliminary race. The sophomore then followed up with an even faster 6.87 in the finals for the win.
The East Texas speedster Dennis also ran sub 7.0. Just a junior, his 7.06 prelim was a tune up as he followed that with a 6.93 to show he is ready to rock-and-roll this hear.
In the 400m, it was two new names and non-seniors who are already out of the gates fast.
Abram Reagan (Austin Lake Travis) lived in he 48s most of the 2024 outdoor season. The junior got off to a personal best type of start at the FasTrak Athletix meet with a 48.06. He had PRs of 49.46 (indoors) and 48.36 (outdoors) from last year.
Brycen Martin (Manvel) is actually a hurdler, but the 300H specialist had to work on a complimentary race somehow. That's where sophomore decided on the indoor 400m. His 49.80 has him sitting near the top of the 2025 indoor rankings so far.
Andrew Jones runs 7.88 to win FasTrak Boys 60H
Girls and Boys 60 Hurdles
Naomi Booker (Tomball), Phoenix Phillips (Humble Summer Creek), and freshman Shyla Boydstun led the way as all three girls ran 8.80 and under in the finals.
Booker was the top of the crew going 8.74 in both prelim and final races. Phillips found a rhythm as she dropped her 8.92 prelim run to 8.80 in the finals.
Boydstun got her first taste of high school level running in this meet. She opened with a 9.01 and dropped down to a 8.80 run.
The boys saw Andrew Jones (Klein Collins) pick up his 2025 season start where he left off at the 2024 season. Jones set the tone early with a swift sub 8.0 prelim run. His 7.99 was just the precuror to his 7.88 time in the finals.
Chadrich Robinson (Klein Oak) was the nearest boy to cracking the 8.0 barrier. He went 8.18 in the first round and then lowered his time to 8.09 in the finals.
