Cooper Lutkenhaus Sets New Indoor 800m Soph NR 1:50.15

Cooper Lutkenhaus (Justin Northwest HS, TX) initiated his 2025 track and field season today with a 800m rep at the Texas Tech Invite. The thing about the first race of his sophomore season is that it wasn't against high school competition, rather it was against collegians.

The top high school half-miler in the country from last year, was also competing in the first indoor race of his career.

Lutkenhaus got off to a good start going through the 200m at 26.63-seconds for a third place positioning following the lead of Ayman Zahafi and the University of Southern California's Nathan Cumberbatch.

The order stayed the same through both the 400m and 600m marks of the race with Lutkenhaus splitting 53.93 and 1:22.65. It looked like the high schooler might have bitten off more than he could chew on the last lap as he appeared to be falling behind the more experienced runners.

Nevertheless, throughout his career, Lutkenhaus has shown the patience and ability to run his own race strategy. He has also become known for his late race ability to apply a timely and ferocious kick. With 80m to go, it was clear that was going to be the case once again.

Lutkenhaus applied his infamous kick with a surge coming off the final curve to overcome both Zahafi and Cumberbatch for the win. His final lap split of 27.51 was better than both of the collegians and the difference maker. It catapulted him to the win in a high school national leading time of 1:50.15; Cumberbatch finished second in 1:50.30 and Zahafi third with a time of 1:50.88.

That is a new sophomore class indoor 800-meter National Record. He surpassed the previous 1:51.12 mark set in 1994 by Michael Granville, Bell Gardens, CA.

Lutkenhaus will next compete on February 8th at the Millrose Games in New York City. He'll step up in competition and run against professional runners; some of which are olympians and national record holders in their respective home countries.
