Cooper Lutkenhaus Breaks Indoor 800m National Record 1:46.86

Cooper Lutkenhaus had already set a sophomore class national record when he ran 1:50.15 two weeks ago at the Texas Tech Red Raider Invitational. That was just a tune up for today. At the 117th Millrose Games, Lutkenhaus ran the overall high school indoor National Record with his 1:46.86 finish.

The Justin Northwest sophomore lined up today in one of the oldest indoor events in America and it ended up being one of the fastest men's 800m races in American history.

Josh Hoey, the previous high school national record holder, lost his high school record to Lutkenhaus, but he gained the American Record with his 1:43.90 winning time. Former Midland athlete and 2016 Texas UIL 6A state champion Bryce Hoppel finished second today, running the second fastest all-time American performance with a 1:44.19.

Lutkenhaus who already held the Texas state record with his 1:47.58 at the Brooks PR Invitational last spring, lowered that mark with today's time.
