San Antonio 6A Preview

There are three full 6A track and field districts in the San Antonio area plus Medina Valley who is attached to District 30. The following are the 6A athletes that I am expecting big seasons from this year. It was difficult to make the final list and I know I left out many others who can be great this year.

Top Boys

Aiden Adams, Jr., Clark - He had a strong sophomore season and was outstanding during cross country capped by a 14th place State finish. The sky is the limit for Adams during the track season.

Austin Anderson, Sr., Johnson - One of the top hurdlers in the area who broke 39s in the 300mh last year. Still has some work to do in the 110mh but should have aspirations of a State meet berth in the 300mh.

Nick Barber, Sr., Brandeis - Showed huge improvement from 2024 to 2025 in the throws and is probably the best all-around 6A thrower heading into the season. Went over 150-feet in the discus and 50-feet in the shot put twice last year.

Luke Bell, Sr. Canyon - Bell was on this list last year but missed most of the season. He still qualified for Regionals in the 110mh and will be looking for much more in 2026.

Xavion Chambers, So., Roosevelt - The youngest athlete of the list. Exploded on the scene with a 21.69 in the 200m in the District finals and followed it up with a 21.60 at the Area meet. Could be the next big sprinter star in San Antonio.

Tristan Childs, Jr., Clark - One of the few sprinters who excels in both the 100m and 200m in the Area. One of only two returners to break 11s in the 100m and 22s in the 200m.

Isaiah Farris, Sr., Stevens - In his first full year of competition, he nearly came out of nowhere to go to State in the triple jump. Will he add a big long jump and consistency to the equation this year?

Yashiyah Griffin, Sr., Johnson - Came out of nowhere last year breaking 48s in the 400m after coming into the season with a personal best of 53.71. What he can do this year is anyone's guess, but I would imagine that 46s is not out of the realm of possibility.

Rayshun Hurt, Sr., Johnson - A star running back who made the move from Reagan to Johnson in the offseason. With Tate Taylor eschewing high school competitions this year, he enters the season as the top dog in the 100m and 200m.

Maverick James, Sr., Steele - He was consistently excellent in the 400m last year running faster than 48.10 in each of his last four races. Depending on the relay situation he could be a Region threat in both the 200m and 400m.

Jayce Love, Sr., Clemens - The leader of a strong distance group at Clemens. Could be the top 1600m runner in the area this year and will challenge for the 3200m spot as well.

Nicholas Maldonado, Sr., Madison - He has posted great distance times each of the past two years and is as good as anyone. Is this the year he makes it to the State Track Meet?

William Moffatt, Sr., Canyon - The latest in a long line of quality pole vaulters from Canyon HS. He cleared 15-6 last year and should be the favorite in the Region this year.

Jordan Pinones, Jr., East Central - Still waiting to get to State after near misses the last two years. Threw over 51-0 in the shot put in six straight meets and will likely compete with Barber for a trip to State in the event.

Caiden Rodriguez, Sr., Brandeis - Has been among the top hurdlers for the past few seasons. He could sweep both events all the way to the Regional finals.

Ben Tealer, Jr., Brandeis - He was a stud in the 400m-800m finishing his season by running the 800m at the 6A State meet. He should be the leader of a strong Brandeis team.

Wolfgang Thoener, Sr., Brennan - Broke 2-minutes in the 800m in every meet and finished strong breaking 1:55 at the Area and Regional meets. He showed more speed in the 400m as well.

Among the top 6A boys there is one glaring omission and that is Harlan's Tate Taylor who set numerous records en route to winning the 100m and 200m at the UIL State meet last year. He has decided not to run a UIL schedule this year but will run in professional meets against some of the best athletes in the world.

Top Girls

Sienna Baker, Sr., Steele - She did not really start competing until the District meet. She nearly qualified for the State meet in the 200m and anchored the Region winning 4x200m team. She will be tough to deal with this year.

Kailyn Brunson, Jr., Brennan - Narrowly missed making the State meet in the 1600m and 3200m. Did not run as well during the cross country season, but she remains a top distance talent.

Jenesis Cordero, Sr., Judson - Made a big improvement in the 400m and remained a strong 200m runner. She went to State in the 400m and even became a consistently good high jumper clearing 5-2 at each of her last four meets.

Julianna Dodson, Jr., Judson - Teamed with Cordero to provide a great 1-2 punch in the 200m, 400m and high jump. She cleared 5-6 at her District meet after opening the season by clearing 4-10 at her first two meets.

Jayla Flemons, So., Clark - Immediately was one of the top 400m/800m runners in the Region as a freshman. She broke 56s in each of her last three meets in the 400m and set a personal best of 2:15.65 en route to winning the District 27-6A half mile.

Nyla Folks, So., Harlan - Part of a group of strong horizontal freshmen jumpers last year. She was a little up and down but showed top end flashes that seem to bode well for the future.

London Graham, Jr., Brandeis - Can be great in the 100m, 200m and 400m. Has been awesome in the regular season but is still waiting on bigtime post-season success. This could be the year.

Cyani Ingram, Sr., Madison - Became one of the top shot putters in the State last year. She was consistently over 40-feet and then threw a 42-foot bomb to take fifth at the State meet.

Charleigh Jacobs, Jr., Brandeis - Last year, I wrote she could be a Regional finalist in the pole vault and discus and she did it. Pole vault seems like her best chance at a trip to State.

Desarae Johnson, Sr., Steele - One of the top all-around jumpers. She was at her best in the long jump, but also showed great potential in the triple jump and high jump.

Mia Kellogg, Fr., Churchill - The only freshman on the list. She burst on the scene in cross country winning the District 27-6A title and advancing to the State meet. It will be fun to see which event is her best.

Kassia Kozarski, Sr., Steele - She has continued to improve each year and had a strong season in the 1600m and 3200m. She was a top-20 finisher at the State meet in cross country in the Fall and is ready to finish her career strong.

Emily Krot, Jr., Johnson - Leads a strong distance crew and has been consistently excellent through her first two and a half years. She showed improved speed and could be set to make the next big jump.

Nellie Mauritz-Barboza, Jr., San Marcos - A unique talent in the area. She was an Area champion in the pole vault and a Regional qualifier in the 400m. She will compete at the top level in both events again this year.

Gabriella McHugh, So., Reagan - She was having a solid season and then had a huge district meet jumping 17-11.25 in the long jump and 36-0.5 in the triple jump showing off her potential. She also runs on two excellent sprint relay teams.

Dessalyn Rogers, So., Harlan - She did not compete much individually prior to the post-season. She showed plenty when given the chance and could be the top sprinter around by the end of the year.

Jera Salters, Sr., Johnson - She has built upon each season and continues to get better. Made it to State in the discus after a personal best throw of 140-3 at the Region meet has a chance to go back in both throwing events this year.

Anaiya Wood, So., Steele - An outstanding hurdler who also owns a personal record in the triple jump of 39'1. She could be dangerous in the 100mH, but the triple jump is her ticket to the big time this year.

Top Boys Teams

Brandeis - They are strong in the hurdlers while Nick Barber and Ben Tealer should bring in big points at most meets.

Clemens - Excellent distance runners and a pair of strong throwers. It could be enough to win the District but they likely need a fully healthy Christian Dupree to have a chance.

Johnson - My pick to win District 27-6A. They are strong in nearly every event and should have three excellent relay teams. Their 200m-400m runners could sent them apart from the rest of the teams.

Medina Valley - Made the move to 6A last year and return a solid crew this year that could make some noise in the area.

Sotomayor - My pick to win District 28-6A. This is a little of a darkhorse pick with Brennan and Harlan both eyeing the title, but depth should be huge for the 'Cats.

Steele - My pick to win District 29-6A. They appear to be more balanced than Clemens and have a pair of studs in Maverick James and Liam Jones.

Top Girls Teams

Brandeis - My pick to win District 27-6A. They have a strong group of sprinters and can also score big points in field events.

Brennan - My pick to win District 28-6A. Kailyn Brunson and strong relays give them the edge in their district.

Johnson - Great distance runners and Jera Salters is a great start for any team. Will they have the sprinters to contend for titles?

Judson - They won the Region last year and bring back a lot of talent. It will likely be a blood bath between them and Steele in District 29-6A and for the Regional title.

Reagan - They finally had their streak of District and Region titles end last year. They should be better this year and could easily take back the District 27-6A crown.

Steele - My pick to win District 29-6A. They are the deepest team around and just need an athlete or two take the next step to win big.
