Braylin Byrd of Tomball Memorial is making the most of his final chapter as a high school athlete, earning his long-awaited trip to Austin for the UIL State Track and Field Championships. The Texas Tech commit has steadily built momentum throughout the 2025 season, and now, he's peaking at just the right time. After missing out on state qualification in previous years, Byrd has not only qualified - he's done it in both the 100m and 200m, cementing himself as one of Texas' top sprinting threats.
Indoors, Byrd set the tone early with a 6.74 in the 60m and an eye-popping 20.99 in the 200m, foreshadowing what was to come once the outdoor season got underway. Since then, he's dipped under 21 seconds in the 200m four separate times, including a wind-aided 20.60 at the Region 2-6A Championships - a mark that places him among the elite nationally.
But it's the 100m where Byrd has turned heads. His breakout win at the Texas Relays with a 10.33 (w) put everyone on notice, and he followed that up with an astonishing 10.00 (+6.0) during the Region 2-6A prelims. Though the wind may have prevented it from being a record-eligible mark, the message was clear - Byrd is a serious contender.
Now heading to the state meet as a double qualifier, Byrd is not just chasing medals; he's racing against history, legacy, and the goal of ending his high school career on a high. All eyes will be on him and his fellow competitors and in Austin and we'll see if he can convert his season-long consistency into a state championship performance.
