It's common to find children following in the footsteps of their parents. In the case of Lucas Cano of Gilmer High School, he's following not only in his mother's footsteps, but also his grandmother's.
Shelly Redelsperger-Cano (mother) and Roberta Roots-Redelsperger (grandmother) are multi-time state championship throwers at both Follett and Perryton High Schools. Roberta started throwing as a junior - when Track & Field was introduced at Follett - and Shelly continued the championship legacy at Follett and Perryton, winning three consecutive discus titles before succeeding at the next level at Texas A&M.

Lucas, an all-state offensive lineman who can easily compete at the next level in both sports, has decided upon a throws career at UT-Arlington. He recently finished second in the discus at the Texas Relays with a throw of 193-6 and then threw a 194-9 to win the UIL 4A - Region 2. Cano was also runner-up last year at the UIL 4A state meet in the discus and finished third in the shot put. He threw a 63-2 PR in the shot put also at the Region 2-4A meet.
The Gilmer school record holder in both shot and discus, Lucas is singularly focused: discus gold at the UIL State Championships May 1-3 at Mike A. Myers Stadium in Austin.
With a gold-medal performance in Austin, Lucas will add to the Roots-Redelsperger-Cano family legacy of championship throwers.
