The postseason has begun. After the conclusion of league championships throughout the state, the focus now shifts to the national championship stage - where the nation's best will collide in pursuit of season-defining moments. Already, the postseason tone has been set. The Texas Track and Field Coaches Association (TTFCA) Meet of Champions delivered elite-level showdowns, and now the Lonestar Elite Invite has followed suit, continuing to leave its mark on the 2025 track and field season.
Held in Southlake, Texas, the Lonestar Elite Invite drew some of the most competitive athletes in the region, each looking to sharpen their form and build momentum heading into national-caliber meets. The energy was unmistakable - this wasn't just another invitational. It was a proving ground. And it delivered. From blistering sprints to jaw-dropping field performances, athletes made it clear that the postseason is here, and they're ready to contend. The impressions left at Southlake may well echo deep into June for some.
Boys One Mile
Two-time UIL 6A 1,600m state champion Caden Leonard had the goal within striking distance. The goal, running sub 4-minutes.
After three laps of the boys' 1-mile race, he was neck and neck with the pace runner and crossed the line at 3:00.21.
If he could pull together a solid 400, he could become the second Southlake Carroll runner to go sub-4 in the one mile.
In contrast to his state meet race a couple of weeks ago, Leonard came through the 1,200m mark in 3:11.41. He dropped a massive 58.76 final lap to finish with a 4:10.17 and the win.
On Saturday, the junior came close, but a 1:04.11 final split got him 4:04.31 in one of the featured races Saturday night at Carroll High School at the Lonestar Elite Invite.
"It feels alright, it's my third or fourth time running it," he said. "A little upset to be honest. That is probably the fastest I have come through in the 1,200."
He said he hopes to become the second Dragon to get under 4 minutes in the race, joining Carroll Assistant Coach Reed Brown, who did it in 2017. Leonard said it would be even more special to do it for his dad, Justin, who is also his coach.
Leonard is the second fastest in school history with a 4:02.46, set last year.
The runner-up in the race was two-time UIL 800m state champion and record holder Justin Northwest's Cooper Lutkenhaus, who finished in 4:06.33. That brings his list of personal bests to 22.12, 46.30, 1;46.81, 4:06.33, 9:26, and 15:58 (XC-5K)
After that, two Arkansas runners finished in order, Matthew Shelly and Brian Burns, in third and fourth, respectively. The two Bentonville runners are coming off a 1-2 finish in the 1,600-meter at the 6A State Championship. Shelly, an Iowa State commit, took first and Burns, a mid-semester transfer from Southern Boone in Ashland, Missouri, was second at the state meet.
Boys 800
Pottsboro's Ethan Johnston was the winner win 1:53.00 -- ahead of Lake Highland's Andrew Thompson's time of 1:53.16. Carroll's Griffin Cords took third at 1:54.43, which is the 5th-fastest time in school history.
Boys 3200 Meter Run Finals
The Dragons had another winner when freshman Kai Gutierrez won the 3,200-meter run. He set a new personal record in the event, besting a 9:25.75 set earlier in 2025.
Parker Noffz from Flower Mound Marcus was the runner-up in 9:10.08.
Girls 800 Meter Run Finals
Lilly Williams, coming off a Southwest Preparatory Conference (SPC) Championships title in the 800, won this race in 2:14.48. The sophomore from Greenhill School in Addison ran 2:19.04 when she won her state title.
Aledo's Sofia Brandenburg took second at 2:16.48. Over the course of the season, she has shown consistency as she continued to drop 2:16 over the final half of the season. It was Brandenburg's Aledo teammate and junior classmate Molly Garrison who was the third girl under 2:20 with her 2:18.19. Garrison finished third earlier this month in the UIL 5A girls 1,600m in 4:51.93.
Girls One Mile Run Finals
Smithson Valley junior Lilly Koenig made the four-hour trip to the Dallas are and took home first in the girls one-mile run.
She got in under 5 minutes, with a time of 4:548.60 and she led the final two laps of the race. At the recent UIL meet, she was second in the 3,200-meter and fourth in the 800.
"It was really great," Koenig said. "I'm just really grateful for the opportunity to come out and get a nice postseason race in. It's really nice doing the end of the lights and the weather's so good."
Lilly Koenig (Smithson Valley #4709)
Next up for her will be the Nike Nationals, June 19-22. She will run in the 800 and if her mile time is low enough, she said she'd love to run in that as well.
She her time was a little slow on her initial lap Saturday but closed well. Her time of 1:12.78 was the fastest
"I'm not too sad about it," she said. "I probably could have pushed it a little bit harder if I paced the first laps right. But I'm pretty happy with it."
The runner-up was Madison Holland, a senior from Frisco Emerson. She ran 5:01.72. Holland led the first two laps with Koenig in second after the first two trips around the track.
Girls 3200 Meter Run Finals
Keller Timber Creek's Megan Calhoun won the 3,200-meter race in 10:51.18 -- a rather comfortable margin of victory.
In second place was Presley Andras from Dallas Ursuline Academy. The junior ran 10:58.70 and is coming off runner-up finishes in the 800- and 1,600-meter runs at the TAPPS Championships.
