Samiyah Roberson competes unattached at the 2025 Texas High School Indoor Championships at Texas A&M University
We caught up to Samiyah Roberson at the ATX Sprint Classic where she competed against collegiate and post collegiate athletes to bring her youth/high school career to an end.
Roberson was one of Texas' top sprint talents largely absent from the spotlight during the 2025 outdoor track and field season. A 2024 UIL 6A state finalist in the 100m-and one of only four returners from that final-Roberson was expected to play a major role this year as her North Crowley teammate Indya Mayberry did last year. However, she ultimately chose not to compete for North Crowley High School during the UIL season.
Her decision reflects a theory growing in popularity elite high school athletes, as conversations surrounding NCAA scholarships, NIL opportunities, and revenue sharing continue to evolve. While the exact reason for her opting out of the school season remains unclear, Roberson still found ways to compete and perform at a high level. The high school season is sandwiched between an unattached indoor track and field and season and post high school affiliated championship season.
She opened the year with solid marks indoors, running 7.54 in the 60m and 24.03 in the 200m. Combined with her 2023 accomplishments, those performances helped her earn a scholarship to the University of Central Florida (UCF) before the outdoor season began.
Though not racing in a school uniform, Roberson stayed sharp by competing unattached at collegiate meets. At the University of North Texas Mean Green Invitational in March, she ran 11.58 in the 100m and an impressive 23.46 in the 200m-despite facing a stiff -2.0 headwind. She later returned to high school competition at the TTFCA Meet of Champions, where she clocked 11.50 and 23.94 to win both sprints.
Still, her absence saw a phenomenal UIL season that proved historic, with standout performances from her peers in the Class of 2025-such as Taylor Nunez, Celeste Robinson, Kylah Woods, and London Jackson Bray-and breakout campaigns from state meet and national level newcomers like Mia Maxwell, Mariah Maxwell, and Lily Pierrot.
Roberson returned to national-level competition in top form. She placed second in the 100m (11.50) and won the 200m in a personal best 23.03 at the Great Southwest Classic. She followed that with a pair of 11.6s at the USATF U20 Championships and capped her season with strong 200m efforts at Nike Outdoor Nationals, where she finished third overall.
Despite missing the UIL season, Roberson proved she's still one of the nation's premier sprint talents-and she'll head into the next phase of her career at UCF with momentum and experience at the highest level.
