The second 4A race of the day kicked off at 8:45 Saturday morning in considerably gustier conditions than the previous race.

Similar to the Girls' race before it, the outcome of this one felt somewhat predetermined; either way, Canyon was not just challenging for the 4A title, but the title of the best team in the state, independent of division.

Canyon teammates Domenic San Miguel and Noah Cooper came in as strong individual favorites thanks to their strong 1-2 performance at regionals and their general success this season. The duo has been a nightmare for their competition all season, and that was set to continue this morning.

Similarly, Anthony Morales of La Feria, who also finished 1-2 at their region, led at the mile mark, coming through in 4:44.50 while a group of seven guys piled behind under the 4:50 mark, shaping the race for the individual crown to be an exciting one.

On the team side, Canyon led with 85 points thanks to their strong performance up front, which was expected, while La Feria maintained a healthy but relatively close margin behind with 110 points thanks to an even stronger presence up front that included the race lead.

The race remained equally as competitive through two miles with the Morales twins of La Feria leading strongly at the front, coming through the split in 9:36 and 9:37, respectively. The Canyon duo lurked close behind and began to make their move just after the 3200m split, shaping the race for the title into more of an all-out 1600m than the race's actual 5000m distance.

Canyon further increased their lead at the 3200m split, knocking their points total down to just 56 points, nearly double Big Spring, who held strong in second with 104 points. La Feria dropped back to third by the point, although still maintaining 110 points thanks to a maintained presence at the front through the Morales twins.

The end of this race provided probably the best finish we've seen in years at the state meet, with Domenic San Miguel and Armando Morales battling all the way to the line, with San Miguel edging the state title by just a tenth of a second in 15:08.30.

2025 UIL 4A Boys state championship race

Noah Cooper finished third to complete a double podium for Canyon in 15:13.40. Jacob Erickson finished fourth for Perryton in 15:28.50, while Anthony Morales claimed fifth in 15:30.80.

On the team side, Canyon predictably took the team title in dominant fashion with two guys in the top three. It was their fourth consecutive 4A boys title. They ultimately finished with just 48 points, giving them a 60-point margin of victory over second-place Big Spring which claimed second on 108 points.

La Feria rode a strong start and two guys in the top five to finish third with 112 points for their fourth consecutive podium finish, while Salado and Sanger tied with 143 points, which Salado won on countback.

As predicted, Canyon walks away with four state titles and another year of dominance over the 4A division. San Miguel executed a brilliant race with an even better finish, setting the tone for what we can expect from him going forward.
