Denton Braswell senior Macy Wingard added her name to Texas distance running history on Saturday morning with a commanding victory at the 2025 UIL 6A Cross Country State Championships, securing her third individual state title in four years. What was anticipated to be a competitive showdown quickly turned into a showcase of Wingard's unmatched front-running dominance.
From the opening gun, Wingard took control, splitting 5:04.2 at the mile, already 15 seconds ahead of the chase pack. She extended that lead to 23 seconds by the two-mile marker, ultimately crossing the finish line in 16:45.7, a massive 43 seconds ahead of second place. Her time ranks as the fifth fastest 5K winning performance in UIL history, cementing her as one of the all-time greats in Texas cross country.
Wingard's journey to the top began humbly as a freshman, finishing 10th in her state meet debut. But since then, she's been nothing short of elite. She won her first title as a sophomore, repeated as a junior, and now closes out her high school cross country career with a near-perfect three-peat. Her 2025 season wasn't packed, but it was padded with fast times and major wins, including a 16:30.00 at district, 16:54.20 at regionals, and an impressive 16:04.40 three-mile effort at the Woodbridge Cross Country Classic in California.
Wingard now joins an incredibly exclusive group of Texas girls to win three or more UIL cross country state titles, including legends like Tatum Goodman (Springlake Earth -2020 - 2023) and Stephanie Duke (Utopia - 1990 - 1993) who both won four UIL 1A state titles and Amy Goodwin (Bellville - 1984, 1985, 1986, 1987) winning four UIL 3A state titles. She also joins Addyson Bristow (Canyon - 2023, 2024, 2025) won three UIL 4A titles, London Culbreath (McKinney North - 2016, 2017, 2018) won three UIL 5A titles.
Wingard also boasts national credentials, a three-time NXN qualifier with an 18th-place finish in 2023, and a Foot Locker Nationals top-10 finisher last season, placing 10th. On the track, she was the state runner-up last spring in both the 1,600m and 3,200m, and holds the No. 2 all-time mark in Texas in the 2,000m steeplechase at 6:45.56.
As Wingard now eyes a fourth NXN berth and the conclusion of her stellar prep career, one thing is already certain, she will graduate as one of Texas' most decorated and respected distance runners ever.
