San Antonio 4A Track Preview

There are fewer 4A schools than the larger school divisions in San Antonio, but local teams still compete across three different districts. While there are fewer schools, they are loaded with plenty of talent and the Regional team titles run through the San Antonio area for boys and girls.

Top Boys

Tate Broaddus, Sr., Davenport - He became a discus specialist last year after mixing in the shot put previously. It worked as he took a District title with a throw of 147-1. Next step is a strong Region meet.

Ty Carter, Jr., La Vernia - He continues to build upon his success year over year and is now a consistent 22-foot long jumper and should be breaking 11s in the 100m at most meets.

Tabias Collazo, Jr., Long Creek - One of the most unique athletes around. Among the top returning 100m sprinters and shot putters in the area. Appears to be preparing for a career in the decathlon.

Koehn Constantine, Jr., Fredericksburg - He has big time hops clearing 6-4 in the high jump and going over 22-feet in the long jump. Oh yeah, he also cleared 12-0 in the pole vault.

Kaden Cypert, So., Floresville - It hasn't taken long for him to become one of the best 4A distance runners in the State. It would be a surprise if he doesn't go to State in the 1600m and 3200m.

Tanner Davis, Sr., Devine - Should be one of the top high jumpers and pole vaulters in the area this year. Could potentially qualify for the State meet in either event.

Rowdy Esparza, Jr., Devine - Expect him to shine this year in the long jump and triple jump while adding the 400m to his repertoire. He is already jumping well during the indoor season.

Breydan Gherman, Jr., Bandera - Ran well in the 100m and 200m as a sophomore just missing out on the Region meet. That should not be a problem this year.

Justin McKinney, Jr., Davenport - A strong hurdler who took it to another level in the high jump last year when he cleared 6-6. Should be a State contender this year.

Dane Mignerey, Jr., Wimberley - He has a chance to be the top pole vaulter in the area this year. He cleared 14-0 for the first time at the Region meet.

John Moore, So., Fredericksburg - Had a great freshman campaign as a hurdler. A Regional finalist in the 110mh and showed potential in the 300mh. Can compete for a Region title in the 110mh.

Nathan Perez, Sr., Fox Tech - Should be one of the top half-milers in the area. Will likely run all three distance races but he is better in the 800m and 1600m.

Cody Phillips, Sr., Wimberley - Went 47-3 in the shot put last year which is the best returning mark in the area. Threw at least 45-feet at three different meets.

Mikey Rodriguez, Jr., Devine - Might be the top hurdler in the area. Stronger in the 300mh than the 110mh and will be one of the Region favorites in that event.

Josiah Saberon, So., Navarro - A young sprinter who will be competing for Region titles in the 100m and 200m before you know it.

Joshua Simmons, Sr., Floresville - He gets overshadowed by Cypert, but on most teams he is the #1 distance runner. Seems to have a little more potential in the 3200m.

Brody Vestal, Sr., Davenport - He flashed big shot put numbers last year. Forms a strong throws duo with Broaddus and both will be looking for post season success this year.

Top Girls

The sophomore class really stands out this year with six of them making the list. It will be exciting to see what that group to do in their second year of high school.

Abby-Kate Adams, So., Fredericksburg - Nearly qualified for State in the 400m as a freshman while also dabbling in the 800m and 300mh. Consistently under 60s in the 400m and should only get better.

Lila Aldrich, Jr., Fredericksburg - One of the top hurdlers around running 45.67 in the 300mh. Unfortunately, the three girls better than her at the Regional meet are all back this year.

Aubrey Avey, Sr., Canyon Lake - She is a bit of a unicorn in that she only runs the 300mh. Fortunately, she does that incredibly well and was fifth in the State last year.

Abbi Brown, Jr., Fredericksburg - She had a breakthrough performance when she won the Region title in the 1600m last year and will try to build upon that and her successful cross country season.

Emersen Cochran, So., Navarro - An all-level sprinter who went to Regionals in the 100m, 200m and 400m. Finished sixth in State in the 400m showing big time speed.

Shana Cutrer, Sr., Canyon Lake - She does so many things well (sprint, high jump, pole vault) but does not have a clear best event. It will be interesting to see if she can take it to the next level.

Isabella Davis, So., La Vernia - A sprinter and long jumper who appears to have a bright future. She ran the anchor on the team's Regional qualifying 4x400m team which shows her range.

Kendall Fallon, Sr., Davenport - Hard to know what her best event is. Fifth in the State in the 800m and also a top level 300m hurdler. She ran 57.27 in the 400m over the summer and would crush the 3200m if asked to.

Kennedy Grindle, So., Canyon Lake - Another multi event athlete who flashed big potential as a freshman. She showed well in both hurdle events and also cleared 10-6 in the pole vault.

Rilyn Grona, Jr., Fredericksburg - This basketball star is similar to Fallon in that she is awesome in the 300mh and 800m. Finished in the top 10 in the State in cross country four times and has an 800m personal best of 2:15.95.

Corina Joyce, So., Wimberley - She finished sixth in the State in the 3200m last year and backed it up with a strong cross country season. Can she add a little speed to drop her mile time?

Kylie Monreal, Jr., Devine - She does a little bit of everything and qualified for the Region meet in the 100mh, 300mh, high jump and long jump before an injury ended her meet. She has the top 100mh time and high jump of all returners this year.

Savanna Oberholtzer, Jr., Canyon Lake - A top level sprinter and horizontal jumper. Nearly went to the State meet in the 100m and will hope to go this year.

Ella Patek, So., Wimberley - She improved her triple jump over 4-feet during the season and performed her best at the Region meet. Her 18-7 long jump mark is definitely a head turner.

Arianna Rivera, Sr., Carrizo Springs - A consistently good distance runner who unfortunately had her worst race of the year at the Region meet. She should be ready to go after another strong cross country season.

Merry Robinson, Jr., Bandera - Has been a part of some great relay teams. With the graduation of Kinlee Lawlis it could be her time to shine in the individual sprints as well.

Layla Rodriguez, Sr., Pleasanton - She is the top returning pole vaulter in the area. She cleared 11-0 at the Region meet last year and consistently went 10-6.

Rylie Wells, Jr., Devine - Teams with Monreal to provide a potent 1-2 punch. She excels in the long and triple jump and has the potential to make States in both events. She is also really good in the 100mh.

Top Boys Teams

Davenport - Will once again be a strong team. They will rack up points in the field events but could use some help on the track to stay up with Fredericksburg and Wimberley.

Devine - They should give Floresville a run for their money and their 4x400m relay team should be great. Tanner Davis and Rowdy Esparza will lead the way.

Floresville - My pick to win District 27-4A. An embarrassment of riches in the distance races plus strong individuals in a variety of events.

Fredericksburg - They will challenge for the district title thanks to their hurdlers and field event athletes. If they can put together a few strong relays they could be in business.

La Vernia - My pick to win District 28-4A. Ty Carter is a great starting point for this team. They are not as strong as the District 26-4A teams, but they have enough talent to win again.

Wimberley - My pick to win District 26-4A. It appears that their sprint depth will be the difference at the district meet. They could be hurt with a lack of quality in the distance races.

Top Girls Teams

Canyon Lake - My pick to win District 26-4A. The only thing they are lacking is strength in the throws, but they more than make up for it with their sprinters and hurdlers.

Devine - My pick to win District 27-4A. They edged out Floresville by 2 points last year and it could be the same this year. Rylie Wells and Kylie Monreal give them a great foundation.

Floresville - It is possible that Alexis Scot and Nora Felun could propel them to the District title. They will need their relay teams to step up to knock of Devine.

Fredericksburg - Last year I picked them to win the District and Region titles. I was 1-for-2 as they lost the District meet but took home the Region crown. The same thing could happen again this year. They are strong in the hurdles, distance events and throws but lack any jumping prowess.

La Vernia - My pick to win District 28-4A. They should be strong in the jumping events once again and they have a strong sprinter in Isabella Davis. They could use someone to step up in the distance events.

Wimberley - A strong team that has potential scorers in nearly every event at the District level, but I don't think they have enough to topple either Canyon Lake or Fredericksburg for the crown.
