Jah'Quan MacAfee (C) powers home for his second individual gold medal
2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
The UIL 4A boys 200-meter final entered the 2026 state meet with a completely open landscape after the graduation of the top three medalists from last season. While DaBryan Blanton's long-standing classification record of 20.37 from 2001 remained untouched for another year, the field still featured several athletes capable of producing elite sprint performances.
Sophomore Jah'Quan McAfee of La Marque entered with the fastest qualifying mark at 21.06 and carried the momentum of a breakout season into Austin, while challengers such as Ivyrson McGuire, Rashad McCoy, Christian Flowers, and Sage Gilder all arrived with marks clustered tightly together in the low 21-second range.
Once the stagger unwound around the curve, McAfee immediately looked in control. Running aggressively but smoothly through the turn, the La Marque sophomore carried his momentum into the straightaway and steadily separated himself from the field over the final 80 meters. With the wind sitting at a legal +1.7, McAfee crossed the line in 21.02, delivering one of the fastest performances in the classification this season and firmly establishing himself as one of the state's premier young sprinters. His victory was especially impressive considering he accomplished it as only a sophomore in a field loaded with experienced upperclassmen.
Behind him, Lubbock Estacado junior Ivyrson McGuire secured runner-up honors in 21.29, while Hamshire-Fannett junior Sage Gilder followed closely in third at 21.37. Texarkana Pleasant Grove nearly placed two athletes on the podium, with Rashad McCoy finishing fourth in 21.38 and teammate Jamarion Richardson taking sixth in 21.60. Kingsville King senior Christian Flowers added another state medal with a fifth-place finish in 21.54.
Although the race did not threaten the historic classification record, the final highlighted the next wave of elite sprint talent within UIL 4A. McAfee's performance not only delivered a state title to La Marque, but also suggested the sophomore could become one of the state's top sprint names over the next two seasons.
