Kenli Atwood Won The UIL 3A Girls 800m Title

The 2026 UIL Girls 3A 800-meter final featured an aggressive pace from the opening stages, but once Kenli Atwood took command, the race belonged to her. Kenli came into the state meet with a season-best of 2:14.22. The Holliday senior elevated her performance even further, powering to a state title in 2:13.00. The opening 100 meters were smooth and controlled before Liyah Reyna aggressively attacked the break and grabbed the early lead at the cut-in. Atwood quickly responded on the backstretch, moving decisively to the front before the 300-meter mark and immediately beginning to separate herself from the field.

From there, Atwood dictated the race with authority. She hit the bell at 1:04.92 right on 2:12 pace and continued to press the tempo instead of sitting on the lead. Her approach was clear: match the pace or get left behind. Down the final stretch, Atwood showed no signs of fading, widening the gap with every stride before storming home over the final 100 meters to secure the championship in convincing fashion.

Earlier in the day, Brynleigh McFarlin had already captured the 3200-meter state title, but the Keene senior returned for another outstanding performance in the 800. McFarlin stayed comfortably in second throughout most of the race and crossed in 2:16.37 to earn silver, completing an impressive distance double at the state meet. Her 1:05.59 opening lap kept her within striking distance early, but Atwood's relentless second lap proved too strong to overcome.

UIL 3A Girls 800m

The most dramatic action came in the battle for third place. Freshman Peyton Van Dyke from Van Vleck delivered a poised race and strong closing lap to secure bronze in 2:19.04 after sitting third at the bell. Raylie Peebles from Mineola made a major late-race charge from eighth to fourth in 2:19.67, narrowly edging Alexys Cheney from San Antonio Cole by one hundredth of a second. Cheney finished fifth in 2:19.68, while Hailey Jasso from Diboll took sixth in 2:20.74.

Margaret Sklar Edna, a sophomore, placed seventh in 2:21.19 after being in the lead pack through the opening lap, while Eustace Carley Pitman finished eighth in 2:25.19. Reyna, who had courageously set the early pace, faded over the second lap but still battled to the line for ninth in 2:25.56.

The final showcased both tactical positioning and fearless front-running, but Atwood's confidence and pace control ultimately separated her from the field. From the moment she took over midway through the first lap, she never looked back, delivering one of the strongest middle-distance performances of the 3A meet.
