Belton's Christian Porter Wins UIL 5A Boys 400m

The UIL 5A boys 400-meter final once again proved why the event remains one of the deepest and most competitive races in Texas track and field. One year after five athletes broke 48 seconds in the 2025 championship, the 2026 field arrived in Austin with even higher expectations as three runners entered with sub-47 regional qualifying performances. Mansfield Timberview senior Brandon Gilmore led the field at 46.25, closely followed by El Paso Hanks standout Ky-Ri Bonner at 46.47, while Saginaw's Londen Houston emerged late in the season as a serious contender after his surprise 46.99 breakthrough at regionals. With Deon Minor's long-standing 5A state meet record of 45.64 from 1991 still untouched, the race looked poised to produce another elite showdown.

From the opening stagger, Gilmore attacked aggressively and immediately put pressure on the field. Running smoothly through the first 200 meters, the Timberview senior appeared in control early, but Bonner and Houston steadily began erasing the stagger from the outside lanes as the race moved down the backstretch. By the time the field entered the final curve, it had become the anticipated duel between Bonner and Gilmore, with both runners battling shoulder-to-shoulder coming off the turn.

As the leaders focused on one another over the final 100 meters, the race behind them suddenly tightened. Comal Smithson Valley's Gavin Williams and Belton senior Christian Porter both closed rapidly from the outside lanes, with Porter in particular carrying tremendous momentum down the homestretch. While Bonner and Gilmore leaned desperately toward the line, attempting to edge each other, Porter maintained his form the best through the final meters and surged past both at the finish to steal the state championship in dramatic fashion.

The upset victory capped one of the most exciting sprint races of the meet and reinforced the incredible depth of the UIL 5A quarter-mile scene. What initially appeared destined to become a two-man showdown instead turned into a perfectly timed championship finish from Porter, whose closing strength ultimately proved decisive in one of the fastest and most tactical races of the weekend.
