Mansfield Timberview's Trysten Shaw Captures UIL 5A Boys 300H Title in 36.29
2026 UIL Track and Field State Championships
The UIL 5A boys 300-meter hurdles final once again delivered one of the fastest and deepest hurdle races in the state, though Robert Griffin III's legendary classification record of 35.33 from 2007 remained untouched for another year. Following Ja'Shaun Lloyd's dominant 35.78 state title performance in 2025, the 2026 field entered Austin with several athletes capable of producing elite times, led by Mansfield Timberview junior Trysten Shaw, Prosper Walnut Grove senior Ashton Fletcher, and Alvin Iowa Colony standout Ian Hill. With multiple runners entering under 37 seconds from the regional championships, expectations were high for another thrilling final.
From the gun, Shaw displayed the calm and composed demeanor of a seasoned championship hurdler. Running smoothly around the curve, the Timberview junior maintained excellent rhythm and quickly established himself among the leaders through the middle hurdles. Behind him, Hill steadily built momentum and appeared to be mounting a serious challenge entering the final stretch. As the field approached the final three hurdles, the race tightened dramatically with Hill beginning to close rapidly on Shaw.

Coming into the final hurdle, Hill appeared to have the momentum, but the race shifted instantly when he clipped the barrier with his lead leg, breaking his rhythm at the worst possible moment. Shaw, meanwhile, cleared the hurdle flawlessly and sprinted away cleanly over the final meters to capture the state championship in 36.29, one of the fastest times in the classification this season. Fletcher followed for second in 36.98, while San Antonio Alamo Heights senior Jack Hollimon earned another state medal with a third-place finish in 37.11.
The race ultimately highlighted both the technical demands and unforgiving nature of the 300-meter hurdles. One small mistake at the final barrier changed the entire outcome, and Shaw's poise under pressure proved decisive. Although the historic RGIII record survived another year, the event once again showcased the incredible depth and quality of UIL 5A hurdling.
